Gear Talk / Re: Rohloff- two questions
« on: February 11, 2011, 10:48:58 pm »
We use a Rohloff-equipped Surly Big Dummy to haul our two toddlers on our cycling adventures. Geared 38x16, we can testify it is perfect for touring with lots of weight -- our rig weighs in over 160 pounds (and growing!) with the kids on-board, and we have yet to drop into the first gear (saving that for when we cross the Rockies later this year).

Really can't be beat it for ease of use,  maintenance, and reliability on a touring bike.

Routes / Re: route from Owen Sound to Cornwall, Ontario, Canada
« on: February 11, 2011, 10:32:55 pm »
While we haven't ridden along a lot of that route (rode Owen Sound to Hamilton in 2008), there is a cycle route (http://www.waterfronttrail.org) along the shores of Lake Ontario that would take you all the way from Toronto to Cornwall. The question is how much of the city would you like to ride through? Would recommend your northern route if you like peace and quiet (although you would see a lot of weekend traffic through that area as it is Toronto's cottage country).

You would probably see a lot more cyclists along the lake.

Bike Clubs / Looking to connect with cycling groups along our route
« on: February 11, 2011, 10:04:58 pm »
Our family is departing this May on a year-long bicycle tour around North and Central America. We are looking to connect with cycling organizations in cities along our route (see rough map here), hoping to organize family-oriented social rides and get togethers with like minded folk.

If you are part of a cycling group, or would be interested in helping to setup one of these events in your city, please let us know!

For us, the reality of bicycle touring just never changed when we started a family. We now have two children under 4-years-old and they have joined us on thousands of kilometers of bicycle travel. We love it, and they love it too!

Our big trip is coming up this spring. In May we leave for our longest tour yet, 12 months on road as a family. We have a blogged a few of our adventures in the past year on our site: http://www.pedalpoweredfamily.com and you can find us on Twitter @pedalpoweredfam and Facebook as well.
