Gear Talk / Winter gloves -- Glacier Gloves
« on: January 04, 2014, 09:42:18 pm »
I  just got a pair of Glacier Gloves as a Xmas gift.  I mtbike commute to work in Helena, MT where the winter air tends to be cold.  These gloves, unfortunately, do not work well insulating against the air.   I ride at 10-12 mph, and if there's any wind, add that to the windchill.    The air temp for my morning commutes have been in the teens.  Halfway through my commute yesterday, had to stop, and get out my mitts, I had fortunately brought along in commute bag.   On another trip, put them under my Izumi lobster mitts, which was fine....gave me an extra layer against the wind, which warmed my hands some, but defeated the purpose of the Glacier Gloves.  Would seem they may be better suited for warmer temps.  Tip to designers - if you wish to make them a true cold weather, waterproof glove, increase the fleece thickness, and add just a breath of thickness to the glove digits if one wishes to wear a polypro liner for extra warmth.

My husband and I are planning to ride the Montana section of the Great Divide MTB route this summer - Roosville to Polaris.  We took a look at the maps, elevation, etc. and are looking at doing the 520miles in 9 days, with a rest day in the middle. That averages out to ~60miles/day.  Does anyone have thoughts on that mileage for that section?  I realize it's relative since everyone is different, but any advice/insight is appreciated!  We both cycle often, and race.  This is planned as a vacation, so we don't want to do centuries every day, but are okay with 5-6 hours/day in the saddle.  The unknown for us is riding with weight (the trailers).  We will be doing some experimenting with them this summer.  Thanks!

Also, does anyone have experience with best (cheapest) shuttle options from Kalispell to Roosville, and Polaris to Butte?  I saw the shuttle pdf, but in case anyone's used them.   Thanks!

You may already be on the trail.  Have ridden that section with a BOB.  We had one day over 60, and it was a grunt.  We "rode into shape, so if you're already in shape, it would seem more doable.   Weight, plus the climbing are the equalizers.

Thanks Fred
Very helpful and most appreciated.

Am looking for opinions re. GPS units best suited for these parameters:  exclusive use would be to download ACA waypoints from mapped ACA routes (eg. Sierra Cascades), and use it for continuous turn-by-turn directions vs. position checking.  Budget not a concern.  Suggestions?  Secondly, any tips on downloading the ACA waypoints onto the recommended unit.
