There's really no easy way to get from Suffolk to that part of Norfolk (tunnels and interstates).  Although it's a bit long, going from Suffolk, over to Chesapeake, to Virginia Beach, and then west to Norfolk would be about the only option.

Although I haven't ridden into that part of Norfolk, I live in Virginia Beach and will be glad to provide additional information if needed.

Thanks John.  That looks like a good option.  If the Pelee Island Ferries won't be running by June 1st, I can head up to Sombra and and catch the Bluewater Ferry into Marine City.

How's the route from Marine City down to Toledo?  The Detroit Alternate route appears to cut over to Ann Arbor before heading south to Adrian and then to Toledo.  Is it possible stay closer to the lake?

Great Lakes / Lake Erie

I'm hoping to do a ride around Lake Erie beginning in late May.  I had planned to avoid the hassle of the border crossing at Detroit/Windsor and take the ferry from Leamington to Pelee Island and back to Sandusky.  Now I find the ferries are in maintenance and *may* be operational on June 1.

The additional 150 miles around the west side of the lake is not a big deal but there still doesn't seem to be any easy way to cross the border.  Has anything changed recently?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Routes / Re: Lake Superior - Earliest/Best Time of Year

Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Go early in the year and have more traffic, more flies and mosquitoes, colder nights, but a better chance of staying motivated through the winter.

Go late in the year and have less traffic, less flies and mosquitoes, reasonable weather but a better chance of something coming up and getting in the way of actually doing the tour.

Thanks for the input.  For the moment, I may just try to block off both late May and September.

Routes / Lake Superior - Earliest/Best Time of Year

Many years ago, I cycled around Lake Ontario in September.  From the moment I finished that tour, I've wanted to tour around Lake Superior.  Apparently, life got in the way - but as a 50th birthday present, I'm going to try my best to make it happen in 2012!

Is June about as early in the year to expect reasonably predictable weather and temperatures around the lake? Any recommendations for the best time of year?

I'm hoping that getting a few weeks blocked out on my calendar will help turn this dream into a reality!

Thanks,
