Thanks for your feedback on the shops along the route!  Unfortunately, it's not possible to monitor the shops inventory and specialty super closely.  Many of the products that you were looking for are highly specialized and many of the smaller shops in the little towns along our routes do not carry items that specific.  One way to find shops that may be more aware of the needs of a touring cyclist would be to look in our Cyclists' Yellow Pages (http://cyp.adventurecycling.org:8080/4dcgi/index.a4d?action=cyp.us).  You can click on the state that you wish to look at and the first two sets of listings will be for ACA member clubs and shops.  These member shops will probably be more familiar with Adventure Cycling and touring in general.  Sorry that I couldn't be of more assistance.  I have passed your comment along to our routes and mapping department as well.

In 2007, Adventure Cycling received a grant from the National Park Service to update, reprint and distribute our Lewis & Clark Bicycle Route maps, originally created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the epic journey of Meriwether Lewis & William Clark.  Our maps give turn-by-turn directions, include information about cultural interests and natural history, interpretive information and the location of bike shops, grocery stores, camp sites, motels and libraries and more  all services cyclists look for while on a bicycle tour.

Thanks to the National Park Service, Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Program, Adventure Cycling will be giving away 275 of the eight-map sets.

Bike Clubs / Starting a Bike Club

In the last 3 weeks I have had four different individuals contact me asking for tips and ideas for starting a bike club.  They could really use any ideas or feedback that you have to offer.  Here is an initial discussion which was posted in the Welcome thread:

This is a great question.  I am going to try and move your post into it's own thread because that will make it easier to find.  

As far as resources, I would suggest talking to the guy who made this post.  I know that he just started this touring club in Utah and may have some advice.  You could also contact Bike New York or the New York Bicycling Coalition for more information about the specifics in your area.

Bike Clubs / Creative Themes for Club Rides

I have been culling through the stack of Bike Club newsletters that I get from our members from around the country.  It is a great way to learn more about who you are and what is important to each of you.  This week I came across a great idea for your next club ride.  The Lone Star Cyclists of Grand Prairie, Texas host an annual St. Patricks Day Scavenger Hunt Ride.  Teams of four are given a list of 150 possible roadside items to collect or photograph along a 44-mile route.  Each item is worth a certain number of points, which varies from item to item.  Teams must attempt to gather as many points as possible in order to beat out the other teams.  The entry fee& one $1 lottery ticket, winnings to be divided among all participants.   Sounds like a good time to me!

Bike Clubs / Getting your club more involved in touring

This is a question that I have seen several times in the last few months: How do I get my club more into touring?  I direct people to our How-To pages and these forums, but I am interested to hear the ideas that you all have on this topic.  What are you currently doing to integrate touring into your club?  Do you have suggestions or things to avoid that you can share with your fellow club peers?
