I saw a blog report on Indians road recently that said it was still passable.

Gear Talk / Re: Klymit vs. Therma-Rest sleeping pads
« on: February 22, 2017, 12:02:13 am »
I've only tried the kylmit model that has all the openings. Compacts very small, but as a side sleeper I found it very  uncomfortable. And now that I use a down quilt instead of a bag, need to use a decent full pad anyway!

I use Locus Pro, works great though I use it in addition to my Garmin as my phablet phone uses too much power to use as a dedicated nav device while touring. As I'm usually mtb'ing, also worried about the phone if I crash!

Used it to alert for waypoints/POI nearby like water sources and such and to edit/create new gpx tracks for my Garmin. It's waypoint/POI management much easier than Garmin's and the alert distances are much more flexible

There are Facebook groups like East bay bike camping.

rookie questions  :) does this work for east and westbound?  What is the general behavior when you turn the device off for the night?  When you turn it back on will it insist that you start from the beginning of the course or will it let you start anywhere on the course?

Thanks!
Most of this is dependent on your GPS unit or app.  I haven't looked at the gpx tracks but probably need to be broken into segments if using a Garmin type device IF a given gpx track has 10k or more points.

Topofusion works well.

If cell phone is in airplane mode with only GPS on and not recording the track, battery life is pretty good. I do use a dynamo and cache battery. But I do use an edge1000 for following the track due to better battery life with the display on for hours and recording my ride.

Apps like Locus Pro let you more easily manipulate POIs and waypoints. Being able to set a proximity alert for something not on the GPS track is nice too (and not necessarily close to the track). And I can edit/download tracks when on route if some route change occurs and write that to the Garmin SD card without a computer.

Thanks a million!

I think these are the coordinates

From my trip last summer, the first clearing is a field for camping and the second had the cabin and an adjacent closed cabin.

I found waypoint and POI usage too much of a pain on Garmin units. And the proximity alerts are not so good. So I also use Locus Pro on my Android phone for that, mainly to have it vibrate for a proximity alert so I keep it in my pocket.

I'm hopin Billie Conolly was right. "There's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes"
The LA Times just had an article on how Jan should be storm after storm due to El Nino with way over normal rainfall.

Wamsutter to savery:
Carried 5 liters, used 3. Was a little worried in the middle as was in the 90's until clouds came in ( yet didn't actually rain).
Note savery only has the little snake museum now which has cold drinks one can buy, though I found them feeding 2 other cyclists with leftovers from a party the night before. I got some hot dogs and ice cream myself.  They are letting us camp here for the night.

Lael Wilcox should be passing through in an hour or so on her ITT!

If you don't have a gps marking diagnus well, once your odometer shows you are in the approximate area, keep a close eye on the South side of the road for lesser used dirt roads, then look carefully for a sign and a fence down that road.

if taking the TD2015 route through the Basin to Wamsutter
- the technical singletrack section didn't seem technical to me, was really an older, lesser used double track. A couple of steep uphills that I walked, only 1 downhill that made me think twice first.
- the first few miles have a couple of turns that are faint and easy to miss, so using a GPS with the TD2015 track makes it much easier.
- 2 solar powered wells on the route, first 22 miles in, Haskell creek before that had some water
- the first 25 miles or so felt very remote, lots of antelope, great views
- the last 30 or so were more of a slog but maybe that is because I had a headwind and one passing thunderstorm. On a Saturday, there were only 3 big rigs speeding through the last section.

I haven't yet done the Wamsutter to savery part of the TD2015 route, but I'm told no water on the route.

Routes / GMDBR MAP 2B notes

I found Coulter Bay much nicer than Flagg ranch, and with better stores, though around 1k feet of climbing between the two. And the views of the lake are great.

If you're taking the TD2015 route through union pass area, it is quite beautiful, but does have a "wall" section that was a bit tough and I'm not sure would be passable if wet as was fairly hard to get up when dry.

The unpaved roads after union pass can be a bit unpleasant after raining for a while, my 3" front was ok, but my 2.2" rear was sliding around.

The "my place" restaurant is evidently closed to the public now. This is the only restaurant on the way to Pinedale after the road is paved and before Cora (and Pinedale).

In Pinedale, the campground is closed but people are staying there and the cold water is on. Evidently the city bought it but hasn't decided what to do with it.

Boulder's gas station convenience store is pretty well stocked.

Between little sandy creek and the rest stop on highway 28, not much water.

In Atlantic city, the Miner's delight inn is closed and up for sale. There are cabins at wild Bill's guns (oddly, a woman in a car at Flathead Pass in Canada told me about these) and looks like other places are available.

Hope this info is useful!
