International / Prague to Budapest - spring 2014

My partner & I are planning to cycle from Prague to Budapest (or Budapest to Prague) in late spring 2014. A couple of questions ...

1) we've flown with our own bikes (Surley LHT) before, without a problem. However the airlines are now charging upwards of $200 per bike/each way. Does anyone have experience with renting touring bikes in either Prague or Budapest? Our idea is to travel with panniers only (6 between us).

2) any suggestions or comments on which direction to travel? Start in Prague, or start in Budapest?

3) there are lots of companies offering self-guided supported tours. Are they worth the money?

4) we're mid-50's and prefer to cycle (depending on terrain) between 40 & 60 km per day, leaving lots of time to enjoy the journey. Your experience with this itinerary might be very helpful.

5) finally, we would love to discuss &/or meet up with any other ACA members who are planning a similar tour.
