A very nice trip is to park in Manistee and follow the coast line on M-22 around the Leelanau Peninsula down to Traverse City and cut back across to Manistee . A nice side trip is to take M-109 up into the Sleeping Bear Dunes and the Pierce Stocking Drive . There are alot of neat small towns along the way with plenty of camping available . Owosso Bob

I live here in central Michigan and have been riding with just an agressive mtb knobby tire . I have found the only time I need to use my studded tires is on pure ice . The other thing I do is switch my pedals to BMX platform pedals , it really helps when the bike starts slidding out from under you , it is easy to just let it go and not have to unclip . It is slow but fun to get out and ride the trails in the winter .

We just got done touring Door County fully packed down . The oldest was 73 and the youngster was 53 with five 59 and one 66 years old and we all got along great during the 300 miles . It is fun to slow down and smell the roses .

I carry a small bottle of dawn dish soap with me and when I have trouble remounting  a tire I just take a real small amout of soap and rub it on the bead and this usually helps to slid the tire on . It also takes the grease off your hands too . I even used this soap on a squeaky pulley after I got rained on as a quick fix . Bob

I qualify seeing as how I am 66 yrs. old . I rode over 3000 miles on my recumbent last year plus almost 2000 on my mountain bike . I still do many week long supported tours plus try get in a couple of self supported tours . Still do one MTB race each year called the Iceman cometh . My goal this year is to do 100 miles for each year of my life for a total of 6600 miles . 10 of us are doing a self supported tour of Door county this year which should be fun as most are near 60 or over . I got a scare 3 years ago when they had remove half of my colon and I swore then to enjoy the rest of my life .

I used the Nashbar trailer behind my MTB for a tour on unimproved railtrails last summer and it came through without any problems . We were on some pretty rough stuff for 375 miles . The only thing I would suggest is to regrease the bearings when you get the trailer , also I went with a better tire .

MDOT announced a widening of the shoulders from m-247 and m-13 in bay county all the way to Standish and m-23 to the Iosco county line . This will be great going along the east side of the state . A 4 million dollar project .
