Routes / Re: Hot Springs Route Idaho - sandy roads??

Hi,

We did ride the first part to Ketchum and that was fine. Absolutely beautiful road. At that time (3,5 years ago) the road was firm.
On the second part, Lick Creek Road, we didn't get very far. My wheel broke, so we had to get a lift to Cascade (where we were lucky to find a new wheel!). But from the car it seemed fine.

It is an amazing route - hope you'll enjoy it!

Great picture!

That certainly is an option we're now considering, thanks Jama!

Hi Jamawani,

Thanks for your reply! That's really useful. We've decided to start in Vegas and finish in Albuquerque.
We kind of like the heat, have been in Utah in July/August so we do have an idea of what we're in for.

We thought South Rim would be more spectacular - and we'd have to do a stretch of highway when we'd go to north rim as well.
Plus - we want to hike down & stay overnight if we manage to get a permit. And that seems to be more feasible from South Rim.

We're fine tuning our route today, so we can decide on how long we want to be away for. For  now, we are looking at 7 - 8 weeks, giving us plenty of time to see all the beautiful parks, towns & scenery!

Southwest / Albuquerque to Las Vegas - or other way round?

In June/July we plan to ride from Albuquerque to Las Vegas, or from Vegas to Albuquerque. Visit Mesa Verde, Canyon de Chelly and of course Grand Canyon among so much more. So via Taos, Durango, Kayenta, south rim.

What would you advise - start or finish in Las Vegas? Starting in Vegas would mean more climbing overall.
What are the prevailing winds? What makes most sense regarding temperatures?

Thanks!

Routes / Hot Springs Route Idaho - sandy roads??
« on: April 28, 2014, 04:11:20 pm »
Hi,

This summer (starting early/mid July) my partner and I are planning to cycle a large part of the Idaho Hot Springs Route - and looking forward to it! Just booked our tickets to Boise and back to Amsterdam from Seattle. We're planning to ride Boise - Ketchum - Stanley - McCall and then on via the Northern Tier to Seattle  :D

We'll be riding with panniers & low riders, carrying our tent & gear with us. Although we're experienced travel cyclists, we're not too keen on very sandy roads (even less so combined with steep hills…)

Two questions:
1. can anyone tell us anything about the condition of the road  Boise - Featherville - Ketchum? More specifically - how sandy is it, are you able to ride it fully packed?
2. same for the Lick Creek Road further up north

Thanks!

Nadine
