Urban Cycling / Re: Advice for New York city

The most enjoyable route into Manhattan would be slightly circuitous.  Route 9W skirts the west bank of the Hudson River north of New York City.  It has far less traffic than the other thoroughfares leading into Manhattan.  Route 9W crosses the river on the George Washington Bridge, giving you stunning views of Manhattan and the Hudson River.  So, that's what I recommend.

Thanks, that sounds great. I hope on my final day that it will be a shorter ride than normal, so a circuitous route is fine. I wasn't sure which bridges take bicycles so that's good to know. I've picked up a city map so I should be able to follow what you suggest without too much hassle.

Hi Andrew - That's the same area I came from. In PA I took Route S from Wheeling, WV to Washington Crossing, PA. This runs the full length of PA. There is info Penn dept of transportation. The route is marked out but you have to pay attention to the turns. Lancaster was a real treat, special area.

Thanks. I just found those PA DOT routes. One runs parallel to interstate 80 most of the way and that fits really closely to where I'd planned.

Thanks, Dreux.

Jkhunka: I'm just having a few days visiting friends after six weeks on the road from San Francisco. But Friday morning I'm setting off again from just east of Pittsburgh PA. I plan to come through NJ from about the Delaware Gap, so probably enter New York City from the north west (ish). I've booked a Manhattan hotel for a couple of nights (post-ride treat!). But I assume the ride into the city will be a lot of urban roads and some might be less cycle-friendly than others.

Andrew.

Hi. I'm finishing a coast to coast ride next week (probably on Tuesday 8 September) in New York. Does anyone have any good tips/suggestions/routes for riding into the city, ending up in Manhattan?

In particular, is there a good way to come through the suburbs from the west or north west?

Many thanks

I'll enter Colorado tomorrow and it's going well, despite the heat and the long, lonely roads. I've met quite a few others along the way. Thanks for the replies!

California / San Francisco to Carson City - any advice please?
« on: July 09, 2015, 03:39:51 am »
Hi. I'm setting off from San Francsico on Monday on the Western Express. I'm trying to decide where to stop for the nights before and after Carson Pass. So does anyone have a suggestion how many miles a day to aim for on the climb up from Sacramento - based on the fact that I can easily manage 80-100 miles when the ride is fairly flat.

And any good places to stay - preferably not camping, although I can if necessary.

(I'm not local, by the way, I'm from the UK.)

Andrew.

General Discussion / Re: USA Coast to Coast

Hi. I'm from the UK and I'm setting off coast to coast from San Francisco in a week and a half. If you want to get in touch afterwards I'd be happy to talk about it. Reply to this thread and I'll get an email alert.

I'm planning about 80 miles a day with a rest day once a week. I'm sure that will change as and when I'm in the mountains or get a tailwind. Going to finish about 10 September.

I've done Lands End to John O'Groats for charity twice and John's right: most contributions were from friends, family and colleagues. So your friends start needing to build a big network. Use Facebook and keep reposting.

Best wishes,
Andrew.

That's great, guys. Thanks. I'm heading off from San Francisco on 13 July. I'll have a tent but hope to find a bed in town when possible. It's hot in the UK at the moment (about 80°F) and I did 72 miles yesterday so I hope I'm ready for this.

Hi guys. I'm flying out from the UK in a couple of weeks to ride coast to coast on the Western Express and TransAm routes. I've done plenty of long distance rides in the UK including Scottish mountains, but I've never ridden in the USA. Any tips would be gratefully received - especially for once I'm up in the mountains. I live in a country that doesn't have bears!

I have the full set of ACA maps and it looks as though even where towns are few and far between I ought to be able to find accommodation in town every night. (I will have a tent just in case.) And a friend who has ridden coast to coast recommended taking pepper spray for wild dogs: that was a new one to me!

Best wishes.

Thanks for so much info. That's great.

Anyone have an opinion of Columbus to Cape Cod?

Routes / Columbus OH to Yorktown VA or Cape Cod help with routes.
« on: March 04, 2015, 01:59:49 pm »
Hi. I live in the UK and am cycling USA coast to coast this summer. I have friends in Columbus OH. Does anyone out there have any tips or advice about riding from there to Yorktown VA or a similar area? Good cycling roads, terrain, accommodation? Really just whether it's a sensible journey.

Another option if I have time is Columbus to Cape Cod. Any similar tips etc would be great.

Thanks guys.

Hi. I'm an experienced cyclist from England, but have never cycled in the USA before. I'm used to long distances and mountains, but could anyone kindly advise on some things for a Coast to Coast I plan to do (solo) next year? (July-August 2015.) I plan about 80-100 miles/day.

How deserted is the Western Express route? Will it be easy to find groceries and a bed (e.g. motel)?
Hope to connect to Trans America Trail from Colorado - worried it might be unbearably hot that time of year. Anyone think it's OK?
Then Underground Railroad to see friends in Columbus OH and across to Cape Cod. Any suggestions for routes/highlights gratefully accepted.
I hope mainly to get a motel/bed-and-breakfast bed each night without booking ahead. Is that easy to do? Everywhere, or only some places?

If anyone has any favourite tips/locations etc do let me know. I'm not worried about distance but need to be fairly direct so I don't run out of time. Hope to cycle about 40-50 days plus a few rest days. Any sections (maybe Kansas?) where it's easy to do big miles and get ahead of schedule?

Best wishes.
