General Discussion / Re: Achilles Problems

Tour Divide races that have that problem, play with seat height and/or pedal with their mid-foot to get it to go away. I do believe that most end up riding to the finish with a slightly lower seat height.

My apologies, that is a tough, but cool section to route through. I just did the Butte 50, which routed from Sagebrush to the Chimney. Nice to see some more singletrack added.

For others looking, that is south of Butte, MT.

I don't see any changes published. I've seen lost riders ride the road towards Thompson Park/Eagle's Nest/Sagebrush Flats. But that's because they turned to early heading south on the route.

Tour Divide

30 x 50 a day should get you from Banff to mid-Colorado and an easy transfer to Denver for an easy flight out.

If you thought those roads and pavement were nice views, you'll be blown away with the scenes along the TD route.

As far as I'm aware, they are first come first served.

Jail has 2 beds, but twine and need your pad to be comfortable.

Sheepherders wagon has a full mattress.

No more teepee since the bear attack.

Tent space behind the museum, I think they've now got that surrounded by an electric fence.

I don't have the environment background, but grew up in Montana and moved around the country as an adult. I do recognize the differences in people along the changing landscapes.

A thought would be to tour the Lewis and Clark route. Thinking of the route as up river and downriver.  Interview river users and citizens along the river towns. How do people in downriver towns view and interact with the river (Hood River, Dalles, etc.) vs. How people up river view and interact with the river (Salmon, ID?)

Note: I haven't looked at the route in years and am going by memory.

As you tour from the west coast to Missoula and go up the Columbia River, that would be good prep to adjust your questioning for going down the Missouri River.

Just a random thought, sounds like it could be a fun project.

To be clear on the above. Gravel route by the OP which goes down 9 mile road is fine.

Gravel/frontage roads from Superior to Frenchtown along i90 have a few dead ends into private property and problems have been reported. I believe those problems are where some maps show a singletrack, see east of exit 70.

The Truckers will be just fine for that route. Rt38 is a pleasant ride and would put you in/near Phillipsburg, which is a nice and small tourist town. Then up and over a small pass to Anaconda.

Looks like a great route, enjoy!

What bike are you taking?

Bikepackingroots.org has the Western Wildlands route that passes through Wallace, ID then the Hiawatha to St Regis. They have a spur from Superior, MT to Missoula that I helped create.

I haven't ridden your St Regis to Missoula route, but I've mapped the same track and understand that many from the Missoula area ride that exact route.

A photo was recently posted on on of the Tour Divide Facebook groups. It was of a couple doing the route on ebikes, self contained, with large solar panels on trailers. You might be able to track them down to share info.

Edit: not a FB group, but a friend in Ovando. See attached for some potential clues (web site on 2nd photo)

I'll bet you are on the Great Divide route. Here is the link to the info on the Graves Creek road detour to Whitefish.

Gear Talk / Re: Tubeless versus Tubes - how well do tubeless hold air?
« on: February 28, 2022, 07:57:27 pm »
No experience with road tubeless, but I've run mtb tubeless for over 10yrs.

Yes, checking pressure weekly is part of the deal. MTB runs a lower pressure (23), so I imagine the higher road pressures lose more air and might be more quickly noticed.

Side note, I seem to lose more air in the colder temps. No idea why.

General Discussion / Re: GPS navigation apps/info?
« on: January 21, 2022, 07:43:13 pm »
I've ridden parts of Montana with maps and basic bike computer. Also rode it with GPS on phone in airplane mode. Both work equally well. The GPS is nice to confirm you are on the correct route. Phone is fine, I rode with it in my jersey pocket. It can be a pain to unlock and view each time, but you get used to it.

Check out Black Mountain Coffee. Approx 5 blocks east of Adventure Cycling HQ in Missoula.

On my last tour, several coffee addicted buddies bought their single packs and said they were much better then the Starbucks singles. Spendy little suckers, but good.
