Congratulations on getting your first road bike.  Before taking it across the country I would suggest getting some time in the saddle and acquaint yourself with the bike. Ride 40-50 miles a day for 5 days in a row on different terrain and weather conditions. Ask your Specialized dealer about mounting racks and panniers and tips for taking it across the country.  A lot depends on you and how you ride.  If you feel comfortable with it, I say go for it.
