Personally I would consider the 4 quart pot too big for a solo trip. I did a six week kayak trip and if I recall I had a 1 liter cooking pot. I also did not have a fry pan but my meals were based on dehydrated meals that I made at home prior to my trip. Camping in primitive places can mean that post meal clean up can be problematic.

From your list you may want to consider how you will wash dishes. If you take the fry pan, what will you need in the way of oil or shortening and how will you carry it? How will you dispose of the excess after cooking with it? The less "civilized" the campsite the more these things can be an issue. Depending where you are traveling it maybe wise to cook, eat and clean up in one location and then move on a few miles to set up camp for the night.

I had a set of Gatorskins on my bike. I am a heavy rider, 250+lbs, and I got about 4,000 miles before replacing them. I have Gatorskins on the bike now as well.

Food Talk / Texas Hill Country ACA tour

I am thinking of doing the Texas Hill Country tour this October and was wondering how the food purchasing and cooking are done. I know its shared cooking but is the purchasing somewhat planned out ahead of time or is it a random wing it kind of thing at the time? What cooking gear is available?

From what I remember of driving in that area last summer US 385 has a fairly wide shoulder but the state routes don't. Very heavy traffic in the vicinity of Mt Rushmore and probably much the same with the Crazy Horse monument area although I think the Mickelson Trail goes close to that. I did have my bicycle with me and did a little riding in Custer State Park. Road condition there was pretty good. Currently thinking of doing the ACA Black Hills tour in 2021.

Look at the northern part of the Bluegrass tour.
See if you can connect to the Midland tour.
The look at the Mammoth Cave tour which gets you headed to Tennessee.

This doesn't give elevation etc but you can trace the routes in Ride with GPS of Map My Ride or other similar route planners.

The problems I see are the fact that the area around Lexington Ky is known as the knobs so it is hilly; the Licking river results in lots of roads ending at the river with no bridge. The most direct route through the first leg from Maysville would be via US 68 but there are some pretty good hills on that route. Quite a bit of traffic but the road is pretty wide and I've not had trouble with cars in the area around Blue Licks State Park. I think there is a bike route that takes rural roads from Blue Licks towards Lexington. I can research that and try driving it to get an idea what it is like. Once you get near Paris and Lexington it won't be too hilly until you are headed out of the Lexington area towards Loretto where you will once again be passing through the knobs.

I think I know your brother. If he is who I think he is, if he is planning to ride the Horsey Hundred there are quite a few people in the Bluegrass Cycling Club who ride west and south of Lexington that may be able to make some route suggestions.

Routes / Re: GAP and C&O Canal Towpath

My brother and I did the GAP and C&O together a couple of years ago. We did two days for the GAP and 3 days for the C&O. Depending on direction you’re heading there’s definitely hammock camping on the C&O and along the Yough. If you can work the distances out definitely at Ohiopyle State Park. I lived for years in Maryland so be prepared for the possibility of it being pretty chilly at night and even more so hammocking in October. Enjoy the ride it’s beautiful.

Do you know when you will be crossing from Virginia in to Kentucky?

Not sure of the exact day, but will be within the first week...I plan to move on through the Eastern part of the route and slow down some in the West since I haven't spent a lot of time in the western states I'll be going through.

I will be near the Ky/Va border right on the route on May 31. If you need something let me know and I'll try my best to have it for you.

USBR 76 passes right in front of my mother in laws house. I will be there off and frequently though the summer and was thinking I would like to set up a pop up canopy along the road with a little "trail magic" available. What are some of the things you would suggest. Water/beverages; food/snacks; other items?

How does a person hit two cyclists on a perfectly clear day?

Distracted driving(cellphone, reading a book, applying makeup etc); intoxicated driving(alcohol, drugs); driving while tired/sleepy. In other words, not properly paying attention to driving a motor vehicle.

http://www.trailsrus.com/biking/bluegrass.html this is a possible route to get you to Tennessee from near Lexington Ky. At one point in time I had mapped out a route through Tennessee in regards to extending USBR 21 through Tennesee and through Kentucky. I'm not sure if that project is still on going or not. At one point I did hear that if you arrive via bicycle at Cumberland Gap tunnel the employees there would ferry you through the tunnel. There is a group that wants USBR 21 to be located a little further east than the route shown in the link. As I recall it was more in line with the Boone trail or trace.

Find out all you can about the USBR 21 corridor and you should find a route to meet your needs.
