riding as a vegetarian on the TransAm is only challenging if you are not willing to eat junk food. .

I never drink gatorade/powerade in my day to day life but when riding on the transam in 90+degree heat there is something very tempting about an ice cold sportsdrink. I began drinking at least a few a week- but in all honesty dont think they are any better than straight up water.

I did the Trans Am with 5 bottles, but 3 should be fine if you are diligent about filling them up. there were often stretches where I didn't feel like stopping at every convenience store, so the extra 2 came in handy.

I would definitely get it put together in Portland. the shop in Astoria is very sub-par in my opinion

Oregon Coast is great- the State Parks have hiker/biker campsites that are super cheap and a great place to meet other riders and wind down after a day of riding. There is a decent shoulder through most of Oregon but if memory serves me correctly that will disappear when you get into California. The redwoods of N. California will blow your mind if you have not ridden through them before. Pedaling south you will have the wind at your back which is always nice. Enjoy your ride!
