Classifieds / Trek 520 frame & all the little pieces that hang on it.
« on: March 03, 2014, 12:15:48 pm »
Hi, I took apart this vintage 1984 Trek 520 some time ago, intending to rebuild it back up, but it's sitting in the basement and all the little parts are in a box.  It's 56 cm.  Includes wheels.  Hey, I even bought a Helicomatic tool I'll throw in with the deal.  If anyone is interested in it, make an offer including shipping, and we'll see if I can get it to you.  No sense in it sitting downstairs unused when someone could use it.  I'm thinking $450 or so would do.

I have lower lumbar and shoulder issues.  The last thing I need is something else compressing my spine even more than the riding does!  I'm not going anywhere in a blaze of glory, anyway.  If I get thirsty, I stop and have a nice drink.  I usually keep a big bladder of water either on top of the rear rack or insulated inside the rear pannier, though, just in case.

Agreed.  I bought it mostly to have the pre-loaded information about restaurants, hotels, etc. when on tour, as well as to supplement the paper maps (the typeface of which is so teeny I can't read 'em anyhoo).  Having the speed, mileage, and elevation stuff is a real plus, and eliminates the Polar-type sensors mounted on the bike.  But trying to figure out how to work the danged thing is ridiculously confusing.  I think the technogeeks take great pleasure in stymying us old f*rts with the psychobabble and acronyms running rampant in the GPS world.  Even GPS for Dummies is way over my head.  Sigh.

Thank you very very much for the helpful responses.

Man, I must be really ignorant.  "Finding the waypoint" is exactly what I'm trying to do.  How do you find the waypoint?  I can find it on my PC, but the Etrex doesn't have that option.  ???

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / well the zooming didn't work
« on: September 09, 2010, 08:21:58 am »
Tried the zooming business.  The Etrex lets me zoom out only about 30 miles.  Obviously I need to change something internally.  I'm buffaloed.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Mme. GPS-dazed & confused.   :'(

Thanks for the info.  That is one truly amazing woman.  Makes my TransAm dream seem manageable by comparison!

Absolutely brilliant with the zooming & moving & zooming again!  Would never have thought of it.  I'll give it a try.  Thanks!

OK this is like old dogs and new tricks here.  The first time I uploaded some of the maps from City Navigator onto my Etrex HCX, it took forever.  Then someone said that you should upload all of them at once.  So today I clicked all of the maps in North America and told my PC to send them to my Etrex.  Now I'm about to leave for Missouri to do the Katy Trail and I'm wondering if those blinking maps are actually in the Etrex.  I can't figure out how to tell.  I tried to find something, for example.  My PC will let me find a POI on the Katy trail, but the Etrex will only let me find stuff where I currently am (which, unfortunately, is in downtown Cleveland).   ::)

So is there any way to tell if all the maps have uploaded properly in the Etrex before I actually get out in the middle of nowhere?

I know this is kindergarden for youse technogeek guys, so have mercy on the lowest common denominator.  And please don't tell me to go read something unless it's written for old decrepit peeps, because I've already read the stuff you say to read and it's like reading a foreign language.   ???

Thanks ~~ really!

Relatively new procedure, approved a few years ago in the U.S.  Wondering if anyone's had this procedure, as opposed to a total hip replacement, and how you're faring with touring after the resurfacing.  Thanks, guys.

>>Your question is a perfectly reasonable one, but how does this pertain to cycling?<<

There are a multitude of questions here about lodging, food, GPS, maps, apparel  ... they don't pertain to cycling either, really.  I appreciate the question and especially the freedom to be able to ask it in an open forum such as this.

Hungry Fisherman sounds wonderful.  Close enough to the Gulf that the fish should be fresh fresh fresh.  Hubby ended up buying a recumbent trike ... yay!! ... I'm wondering if Route 44 has a broad enough shoulder that he wouldn't be sticking all out in the road.  If I recall, it's a pretty busy east-west highway?

The new contract of carriage is dated July 28, 2010, and specifically states that (iv) With the exception of wheelchairs, mobility aids, and other assistive devices used by a Qualified Individual with a Disability, Carrier will not accept as Baggage any item having outside measurements (i.e., the sum of the greatest outside length plus height plus width) that exceed 80 inches or that weigh more than 100 pounds.

Too bad.  Those big bike boxes coulda held my Dutch commuter bike, which I can't seem to shove in a regular bike box without thoroughly dismantling her.

Thanks, Mark.  I know Floral City well.  We have a "snowbird" home in central Florida, and I'm always so happy to come down from Cleveland and ride the Withlacoochie and Van Fleet trails in January and February!  One of my daughters rented a bike from Hampton's Edge a couple of years ago to join me on the trail.  Next time we're down there, we'll talk to Regis a bit.   Great suggestion ... we didn't realize he had trikes in the shop.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bob.  We were more looking for a good used trike for Terry's first pass, and then upgrade later as we discover more about what fits, what he likes and doesn't like, etc.  But we appreciate the suggestion.  We do know that Catrike won't work, as it's too narrow for him.
