I did the route back in Sept. Stuck to the original route without any issues. There were a few trucks on SR 78 but you know when they're coming and they give you room.
I've never had issues with semis and wish Adventure Cycling would quit making them sound like their always some huge risk.

If they feel the need to reroute the ST, how about coming into Austin and then the rest of east TX?
Like leaving La Grange on a road with zero shoulder and constant traffic in both directions. I made my own route taking back ranch roads.

Or leaving Shepherd where I again made my own route on the US highways, that ACA feels the need to warn you about even though there's very wide shoulders.
A rider was killed on the route outside of Shepherd a few days after I passed through

Leaving for S. Tier next week. I'm sticking with the original route for the reasons DRH mentioned. I did it 3 years ago and didn't think it was too bad. Especially compared to some other roads AC has put me on over the years
You liked Southern Tier so much you're doing it again? We're looking forward to doing it next year.

I did San Diego to Austin in spring 2018 then Jacksonville to New Orleans that fall. Trying to do it in full this time

Definitely not fast at all. Lol. I meant trying to avoid a lot of it. 4 hours in the heat instead of 7-8

I'll be there either a Tuesday or Wednesday early morning to avoid the heat
