General Discussion / Southern Tier -- Austin to New Orleans
« on: February 10, 2024, 11:49:44 pm »
Greetings.  I biked from San Diego to Austin a few years ago (and it was fantastic) and I may have a week to ten days in March to do Austin to New Orleans.  Understood the scenery and hills will be more modest.  Any thoughts on what this stretch is like?  Thanks.

Routes / (No subject)Southern Tier late February W to E?
« on: December 08, 2022, 12:50:13 pm »
Hi:  I biked on the Southern Tier from San Diego to Austin last year -- I departed the second week of March.  I aim to do similar this spring and to leave three weeks earlier, so late February. I had only a couple super cold hours last year -- and am wondering if anyone thinks those three weeks earlier are problematic for this year.  Of course, we never know what weather will bring.  Thanks.

General Discussion / Wind on southern tier tomorrow
« on: March 28, 2022, 11:18:08 pm »
Greetings.  I’m in Marfa.  There are high wind warnings for tomorrow.  I had wanted to have long day to make it to Sanderson, which is 110m but much downhill.  Seems 15mph at dawn but then 30mph by 1.  Wind Direction is either coming from south or southeast.  Biking is mostly east.  Hate to wait it out as it may be two days.  Any thoughts?   Thanks.

Routes / El Paso bypass
« on: March 25, 2022, 12:51:49 am »
Hi. Enjoying the southern tier route a ton. Tomorrow I will hit El Paso. Time is tight as I have to meet someone that evening.  Getting around Phoenix was no fun. I see the ACA route has a bypass of El Paso but it’s 5 or so miles longer.  Anyone know what is fastest way though El Paso?   Thanks.

Hi.  Likely a very basic question.  I have saved my southern tier section two route on ride with gps but can figure out how to get it to sync on my wahoo elect.  I managed to do it for the first section but can’t do it again.  Thanks in advance.

Thanks so much for replying.  Actually I meant the stretch from a bit west of Brenda, AZ on I-10 to exit 112 west of Phoenix. It’s mentioned in the “using this map” section of ACA southern tier map #1.  The stretch you’re  describing seems to be on I-8.  FWIW I’m in Calexico now and was planning on riding to Blythe today.  And it’s just east of Blythe I could pick up 10 instead of going up to Soleme and then Wickenburg and then Phoenix Thanks again. Love this community.

Routes / Southern tier I-10
« on: March 13, 2022, 11:57:48 pm »
Hi. I am three days into the southern tier. I see on the maps that it is possible to do a shortcut going east from the Arizona border on I 10 and meeting up in Phoenix. I would consider this as it would save me a day. Anyone have any thoughts on how I 10 is? I am staying in hotels it’s 120 miles so that is a bit too much for one day. If there is a hotel that say 90 miles. Thanks

Routes / Counsel on Southern Tier W to E starting mid March
« on: January 20, 2022, 03:50:18 pm »
Greetings, I've already received a bunch of wisdom from this great forum. I'm planning a solo, hotel/motel Southern Tier W to E trip starting mid March.  Will start at about 80 miles/day, then hope to average 110 or so.  I'll be relying on the ACA maps to identify lodging and the route.  Any thoughts/warnings/ideas on the trip from those who know the route? Seems if I'm a bit flexible about length of days in the places with less towns I'll be fine on the hotel front.  Also, any great bike stores recommended at the kickoff spot?  Many thanks!
