General Discussion / Family tandems?
« on: July 09, 2018, 10:21:52 pm »
Hello, cyclists! My 7 year old daughter is outgrowing our much loved Weehoo trailer and I’m wondering if anyone out there has any personal experience with a family tandem. Two models that look suited to long trips are the Co-Motion Periscope and Bike Friday Family Tandem. (And I know why but...both are quite expensive.) Leads/suggestions/advice are most welcome and will be appreciated.

Gear Talk / STI vs. Bar ends
« on: November 17, 2008, 11:34:01 am »
About two years ago, I was considering two new touring bikes, Cannondale or Trek.  I inquired of this forum the relative advantages and disadvantages of bar ends shifters vs. STI.  I got a lot of good advice.  At first I was leaning toward the Trek (with bar ends) but I ended up getting the Cannondale when my local dealer was unwilling to down-size the Trek's stock gearing for a reasonable fee.  My old bike (10 years old at the time) had bar end shifters.

For the benifit of those who may now be shopping, I can answer my question definitively: given the choice, bar ends would have been the better choice.  STI shifters are convenient and somewhat more efficient as they require less position shifting to change gears.  But the STI shifters, combined with the nine-speed cassette, are waaaaaay more finicky than the bar-ends ever were.

On my old bike, I adjusted the bar-end shifters maybe once or twice a year, I changed cables and the rear cassette only once in 10 years; and changed the chain only twice.  With the new bike, it seems I will be replacing the chain, cassette, and cables every year, and the shifters require constant adjustment to keep smooth shifting.

Unlike a racing or sport bike, as a touring rider I am concerned first with reliablilty, second with comfort, and third with durability--the STI fails two of these three tests in my experience.

Happy riding!

Gear Talk / Bar end vs. STI.....who cares?
« on: October 15, 2006, 12:53:00 pm »
thanks for the input.  My only bike, which I've had for over 10 years, has bar-ends, and they've been fine but I don't love them.  I'm considering the Trek 520 and Cannondale T2000 and one of the differences between these bikes is the shifters, so I was trying to get a sense of other people's preferences.

Gear Talk / Bar end vs. STI.....who cares?

It seems to me that STI shifters are more convenient and bar-ends a bit clumsy.  Aside from style, why do many tourists prefer bar-ends?

Gear Talk / pedals?
« on: September 07, 2006, 12:03:42 pm »
My old SPD-compatible pedals are worn out and need replacing.  Don't love them; don't hate them.  Does anyone suggest I consider other styles like Eggbeaters (or others)...or just buy new SPD's?

Routes / WHICH ROUTE?

I'm also considering an east to west tour either using most of the TransAm or most of the North Tier.  In the summertime.  I'd also be keenly interested in any members thoughts on this.

General Discussion / Anyone had knee surgery?
« on: March 09, 2007, 12:00:20 pm »
I recently had arthroscopic surgery with "lateral release" on my right knee.  Recovery is ok and I expect to ride again.  I'd be keenly interested to hear from anyone out there who has had similar treatment and recovered to ride long distance again.

General Discussion / Do I really need to carry a spare tire?
« on: November 09, 2006, 11:11:28 pm »
I've been on several 500-750 mile rides and a half dozen or so 3-5 day rides, all in the eastern states.  I've always carried a spare tire.  (Of course, I carry two tubes, but I'm talking about the tire.)  I've never even come close to needing it.  I'm planning another long distance trip next summer.  I will if I have to, but do I really need to carry a spare tire?  Is there anyone out there who has shredded their touring tire on a road ride?  Thanks in advance for any advice!
