Gear Talk / trailer and rear pannier?

A sleeping bag doesnt sound like it would add to much.However a 2 wheeled trailer like a nomad sould be able to haul everything.And with the wheels directly under the load it helps take the load off the bike.

I believe what youre after is from R.E.I..They use them on the novara safari bike and used to be available on the web for about $ 20.00.Adventure cycling magazine did a review on the safari last year but I cant remember the issue.Am thinking of getting a set myself becauseyou can use them like drop bars,straight,or aero bar style

Like you I'm trying to decide between the two.Lately I've been leaning towards trying a yak or ibex.It just looks easier to pack or get to things.Plus I understand it puts less stress/wieght on the bike.As im a big guy anyhow this may be a plus.

Take a day off,keep clean and dry and try Desitin ointment.What kind of saddle you using?I used to have one of those gel seats with the nylon cover and it would kill on a long hot ride so I went back to leather.much better.

Im kind of a newbie myself,but on the few trips Ive had a burley nomad and think its great(no tipping,easy to unhitch).That and a handlebar bag or a regular bike rack.Ive never tried a b.o.b. yet,and limited experience with rear panniers.The only problem was putting in to much weight before getting used to it.So start out easy.Just 'cause it has a 100 lbs. cap. I never need that much stuff!

As a gun owner I cant even think of a good reason to carry any type of firearm on a bike.Besides all the legal issues where would use it? in a public campground,on the road?Tasers are probably another bad idea.Just carry some HALT or a big stick for the dogs.As for people problems(never had any myself)again with the spray or improvise with with a tool if you cant just get away.Not much to do about cars except be aware.

150 bucks just to fit you for a bike?!You need a new shop.When I bought my last ride they did it for free.last year I did 1000 MI. on a raliegh c-40 and a used burly nomad.

Lots of luck!I began riding again after years out the saddle...did the adkins thing and working out to drop the weight and started riding with a huffy mnt. bike.then got me a good used road bike.Just ride every chance you get and go a little farther each trip,just dont overdo it right away.As for bikes,I did my last trip on a hybrid($300)and an old burley trailer I picked up used with no problems.Dont go too cheap but you dont need to spend a mint either.Lots of luck and enjoy!

On my recent trip I really only locked it up if I was going to be out of sight for a while.I was more worried about someone getting into my bags.But sometimes I got some help from people like a Wal-Mart greeter who kept an eye on it while getting some stuff.At one camp site I was worried about some kids roaming around in the night so I rigged up a noise maker out of cans.But really using common sense I never had any problems.

start as early as possible.I did a miny tour through Ohio,Indiana(east to west)last year.The temps. are still mostly summer like in early sept. but the winds tend to pick up around mid-sept.I was fighting it the whole way.Oct. is a mix of warm /cold but it usually doesnt get too nasty till nov.. But you should be way past here by then.Me,I'm a wuss and don't do too much cycling in the winter,so good luck.
