Connecting ACA Routes / Transamerica/Northern Tier link
« on: February 21, 2006, 12:00:11 am »
You might consider turning notheastward in eastern Kansas (EUREKA or there abouts) and travel off AD. Cyc. maps for a bit.  Kansas roads north and east to Missouri and then to the western most point of the Katy Trail in Missouri.  I believe it begins in Clinton, Mo., about 40 - 50 miles from Kansas.  It goes all the way to St. Louis.  You could hook up with the Great Rivers route going north and then hook up to Muscatine, Ia and there pick up the Northern Teir route.  The Katy is a great rails to trails and you can very nearly travel across the entire state with no traffic at all.  Hope this helps.

Routes / Arches Nat'l Park/ Western Express?Colorado/Utah
« on: April 30, 2005, 02:18:24 am »
Hi, I need some route info/help from fellow tourers.  The Western Express, going east to west in sw Colorado dips to the south at Montrose.  I would like to go to Arches Nat'l Park in Utah without going as far south as the route goes. After heading south from Montrose would it be possible to go west at Placerville? Does anyone have any idea of the roads and conditions between Placerville going west on rt 145 into rt 90 into Utah on rt 46 by La Sal?  This route would allow a visit to Arches NP and the Needles area of Canyonlands NP before going thru Monticello, Utah on the western express route.  All advice and info would be greatly appreciated

Routes / KATY TRAIL
« on: April 20, 2005, 10:18:22 pm »
I want to pass along some new info for future Katy Trail riders.  The county of St. Charles, Mo. has opened a new county park, KLONDIKE PARK, and it is right on (next to) the Katy Trail.  The park offers camping and shelters and cabins.  It has hiking and biking trails and it connects to the Katy via the bike trail.  Actually, the Katy goes right along the side of the parking lot at the new river access for boaters at the new park boat ramp.  It is located between Matson and Augusta trail heads, somewhere around the 61 or 62 mile post marker.  Hope all the trail users can put it to good use - it seems there are hardly any camping areas along the trail so this one should help fill that gap.

Routes / St Louis Airport to start of L &C at Hartford Il
« on: April 19, 2005, 03:21:35 am »
Hi, I live in the St. Charles, Mo. area and am very familiar with the Katy Trail, which is part of the L & C route.  I would fly in to St. Louis and start the ride at the airport or taxi across the river to St. Charles.  The first 30 miles would not be accessed but logistically this would work the best.  There are a couple bridges you could bike across easily to get to the Katy.  If I can help in any way with info let me know.  DaveM

Routes / western express- pacific coast
« on: April 07, 2005, 02:13:14 am »
Thanks for all the responses and info.  After these posts and more map reading I believe my final destination will be Santa Barbara.  Anyone out there know of a paricular bike shop in that area to recommend for boxing and shipping my bike back home for me?  I will pro'ly take the advise of renting a U-Haul or one way car rental for the trip to LA and the airport there for my return flight.  Thanks for the info.  If you can send any other info my way it would be appreciated.  Only 5 more weeks til my leave date and am looking forward to it.  Getting all my gear together and riding every day.  Thanks again to all, Dave M

Routes / western express- pacific coast
« on: March 21, 2005, 11:43:36 am »
I am planning a ride from St. Louis to Calif. and will pick up the transam into the western express route.  I may have enough time after getting to San Fran to ride part of the Pacific Coast route.  Anyone have info on the route south of San Fran? Does anyone know of transportion options from any of the smaller cities to one of the larger airports for departure back home? For example, Santa Barbara to airport (distance and what transportion is available).  Any words of wisdom for riding the Western Express?  thanks

Routes / Katy Trail (MO) and road tires
« on: March 17, 2005, 12:12:06 am »
Remember that the KATY's surface is hard packed in the dry weather but after a good rain it is not as easy to ride with skinny tires.  For the most part, any tire will do.  I live close to it and ride it often if I can help with any other info.
