it's bike trip season, and if you're thinking of riding one of the great long distance car free paths in north america, you might find useful information at

a non-commercial website on where the paths are, their setting in nature and history, and where to find food, water, camping and lodging along the way.

covered in detail are the Mickelson Trail, P'tit Train du Nord, Great Allegheny Passage, C&O Canal, Pine Creek Trail/Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, the Greenbrier River Trail, and the Carriage Roads of Acadia National Park. 

and if you ride the paths this season, we hope you'll use the Riders Suggestion pages on each trip to tell other touring cyclists (including ourselves) your favorite places to eat, sleep, and get ice cream and beer, so we can better plan our own trips.

The recumbent-riding, touring cyclists who write BicycleTouringOnCarFreePaths have added the carriage roads of Acadia National Park to the non-commercial website -- information on the paths, why you'd want to ride them, and how to plan for the trip.

The Great Allegheny Trail, C&O Canal, Pine Creek Trail, Greenbrier River Trail, P'tit Train du Nord, and Mickelson Trail are also covered in detail on the website.

If you ridden any of the paths, and want to tell other touring cyclists about the best beer and ice cream, campsites, and lodging possibilities, hope you'll add your recommendations -- or disrecommendations, as the case may be -- to the Riders Suggestion pages for all of the trips.

hi, much appreciate advice from bicyclists who've ridden the adventure cycling adirondack loop.  i'm thinking of riding it early-mid sept, and wondered about traffic, food and ice cream, camping possibilities, and also suggestions on things to do along the way.  usually i tour on car free long distance bike paths, but the adirondack loop looks like a great trip.  how much of it is along lakes?  thanks, appreciate the help,

trail maps are a great idea and would help touring bicyclists plan their trips.  i put the website together as a learning experience on a mac using iweb, and to be honest, i'm not sure how to add trail map pages.  two issues.  i'm not sure i can just copy maps i find on the web and post them without getting permissions.  second, not sure how to annotate the maps to show things like bike shops, if they aren't already included on the trail maps available online.  so advice much appreciated on maps.  and also, if you've ridden the paths on the website, hope you'll use the Rider Suggestions pages on each path to recommend/caution against  campsites, B&Bs, motels, restaurants, sights along the way, to help others plan their trips.  jeff

hi brian, i commute every day 22 miles bethesda-dc, and pass cycle life bikes twice each day, and the friendly and extremely knowledgable mechanics there are the commuters' best friends.  the store is about one block from the start of the c&o canal, and while they specialize in high end road bikes, they do sell a lot of commuting and touring machines.  when i break a chain on my recumbent, or the derailleur gets pulled toward the wheel, or i need a headset checked, i stop in to cycle life and they take care of the problem on the spot.  their outlook is, get the commuters back on the path, so they can get home.  highly recommend them.  and while they're in georgetown, their prices are great.

that's a great bike and tire choice for the c&o.  i've ridden in many times with 35mm touring tires.  you might take a look at the website below for some useful information about the path, what to see and do along the way, camping motels water and food.  have a great trip -- jeff

http://bicycletouringoncarfreepaths.org/ is a non-commercial website written by touring cyclists for touring cyclists about the great long-disance, car-free bicycle paths in North America.

The site gives the information to plan a trip that could be across the state or across the continent -- where the paths are, narratives on their settings in nature and history, information on lodging and camping, restaurants and food, ice cream and beer, bike shops and shuttle services.

Paths covered in detail include the C&O Canal, Great Allegheny Passage, Greenbrier River Trail, Pine Creek-Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, Mickelson Trail, and the P’tit Train du Nord.  Other paths are covered in somewhat less detail.

We hope other touring bicyclists will add content -- tips for doing the trips and pictures -- to keep it current and expand it out.  And as more touring bicyclists write us about their favorite car-free paths not now covered, the list of paths on the website will grow.  If more people are on the paths, we might get more and better paths.

Bicycle Touring on Car Free Paths is a non-commercial website written by touring cyclists for touring cyclists on the dozen or so great car free long distance bicycle paths in North America.

It's a community effort; those of us working on it hope others will write about paths they love not currently covered on the site, and give suggestions as well as corrections on the trips that are covered now, to help fellow cyclists plan our long distance bike trips on car free paths.

hi bob,

some other touring cyclists (on tour easys) and i have written up a number of the sweet long distance car free bicycle paths in north america -- the mickelson, greenbrier, great allegheny, c&o, and now the p'tit train du nord.  we've been hoping other cyclists will write up long distance paths they've ridden and not covered well on the website, especially the chief ladiga/silver comet, coeur d'allenes, and kettle valley.  there are probably other great paths we don't even know about.  anyway, the website covers the paths their natural settings, camping and lodging, food water beer ice cream and restaurants, and services along the way.  the site is:

in spirit of modesty being among the worst policies, link below is to picture of my newly painted tour easy set up for touring on the p'tit train du nord in quebec. ortlieb motorcycle bags under the seat (qrl2 mounting), ortlieb classic plus bags on the rear rack (also qrl2 mounting). everything in the bags for a two week trip, except the sleeping pad, too stiff to bend into the bags. sweet setup. picture is at the bottom of the webpage.

have added the P'tit Train du Nord in the Laurentian Mountains to the non-commercial site -- why you'd want to ride it, lodging and camping, food and water, logistics and services.

and we hope other touring cyclists who've ridden the path will correct any errors in the story and also add their own suggestions to ride this great path.

is the colton point motel right on the path?  and if not, how far is it?  safe ride?

are the state parks campsites right on the path?  and if not, how far?  safe riding?

are there any camping/lodging possibilities at the southern end, and/or in the middle of the path?  thanks a lot, really appreciate the help, jeff
