General Discussion / New York State cycling Maps
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:48:25 pm »
Hey all!

I have travelled with ACA maps in the past  (pretty good). I will be touring through western NY this summer. There are no ACA maps where I want to go. New York State DOT puts out bicycle maps that help me. Has anyone used them? Are they accurate? Problems? Do tell.

General Discussion / Crossing Canadian Border
« on: January 15, 2012, 10:58:29 pm »
Hi all,

I will be cycling from southern Pennsylvania to Ottawa this July through western New York State. Has anyone taken this route? Any special procedure for crossing the border by bicycle (I am a US resident)? I have already cycled from southern Penn. to Key West (loved it!) and am looking to complete my cross country. Any tips would be helpful.

Thanks,
Sprocketman

General Discussion / Atlantic Coast Route
« on: February 05, 2011, 11:31:00 pm »
Hi everyone,
Last summer I did the Atlantic Coast route from Norristown, PA to St Augustine, Fl. This summer I am taking the AC route from  Augustine to Key West. Other than the category 5 heat, can anyone tell me about the route, particularly from Miami to Key West. Do the bridges have bike lanes? How is the traffic on the route? Any help would be great.

General Discussion / BEST ADVICE EVER
« on: January 10, 2011, 11:01:31 pm »
Just before my first tour, my father told me to put a small wheel in the front, and a large wheel in the back. This way I am always going downhill. What is your best tip??

General Discussion / Why the low thread numbers?
« on: December 29, 2010, 12:59:34 am »
In addition to biking, I race sailboats. To get most of my sailing fixes, I go to Sailing Anarchy - a website for sailing and stuff. What I noticed is that that website has over a million responses and new threads every day. This site seems to average 5 - 10 hits per thread and minimal new threads. Sailing Anarchy seems to average much more than that. My point is that sailing is a niche sport. My guess is that less than a fraction of one percent sail on a weekly basis. How many people cycle every week? I don't know if anyone can answer that, but it can't be less than sailing. So let's get some conversation going here. I will start it off. The best part about cycle touring is...

General Discussion / Atlantic Coast Route
« on: November 30, 2010, 06:37:26 pm »
Hi everyone,

I did the Atlantic Coast route from Norristown, Pennsylvania to St Augustine, Fl. back in July. I had such a great time I am now planning a trip this July from Norristown, Pa. to Maine and possibly Canada. Has anyone done this half of the AC route? What are the road conditions like? Hills? Highlights? Blackflies? Any information would be helpful.

If anyone is doing the southern half of the Atlantic Coast route send me a message, I would be glad to help. I highly recommend it.

The last trip did solo. This time, I would like to put together a group of 3 or 4. If you are interested, send me some contact info.

General Discussion / TRANSPORTING A BIKE ON A BUS
« on: November 23, 2010, 11:59:45 pm »
Hi everyone,

I will be riding From Pennsylvania to Ottawa this July. I have to get back to NYC. I am considering Greyhound. I know they will take the bike on the bus, but has anyone ever done this? Do they have a separate compartment for bikes? Or do the bikes get stuffed in with the luggage? Are they picky about how the bike is packaged? Am I risking damage?

Ok, this is an extension from my other post. There has to be somebody out there on the east coast who I will be passing on my way from Pennsylvania to Florida. I will be camping and staying at hotels depending on how I feel that day. I'm figuring Pennsylvania June 19-22, Maryland - DC- Virginia June 23 - 28, North Carolina June 29 - July 3, South Carolina July 4 - 9, Georgia July 10 - 15, and Florida (to St Augustine) about July 20. Give or take a few days each way on this calendar depending on how much I get lost and how late I sleep. Give me a call and let's do a few miles together or meet up for lunch.

General Discussion / BIKE TRIP FROM PENNSYLVANIA TO FLORIDA
« on: June 07, 2010, 11:53:26 pm »
Hi,
I am leaving from Pennsylvania on the Atlantic Coast route and headed to St Augustine Fla. I'm going alone at a simple pace (60 miles a day). Also, I put a real big wheel on the back of my bike and a small one in front. Physics tell me it will be downhill all the way. I should be in Fla in about 28 days. Anyone travelling in that direction? Anyone care to do a leg or two? Do tell.
