General Discussion / Will the 'Sequester' effect my tour this summer
« on: March 16, 2013, 12:52:15 pm »
I've been planning a tour starting in the middle of June beginning in Montrose, CO going north through the Tetons/Yellowstone NPs then up to Glacier NP then onto the Northern Tier west to Twisp, WA connecting to the Sierra/Cascades route south to Lake Tahoe and maybe down to Yosemite NP.  On C-SPAN, they said that many of the back roads would not be plowed and that services in the NPs would be cut back.  I could start later, if it would make a difference.

Gear Talk / Shimano Triple Shifter Problems
« on: August 17, 2012, 12:53:25 pm »
When I'm in my largest gear and shift to the middle gear, the cable doesn't stop at the middle gear and goes to the smallest gear.  Then, I have to shift back up to the middle gear.  Has anyone had this problem?

General Discussion / Dry Counties on the TransAM
« on: January 14, 2010, 02:50:47 pm »
It looks like I'll be doing the TransAM this summer.  I like to have a few beers in the evening after bicycling all day, but I know there are a lot of dry counties in Virginia and Kentucky.  Can anyone tell me those dry counties I'll be going through?

Thanks

Routes / Jasper, Alberta - Glacier NP - Seattle - south on Pacific Coast
« on: October 09, 2009, 01:52:23 pm »
I'm planning to ship my bicycle to a bicycle shop in Jasper, Alberta, fly to Edmonton, take a bus or train to Jasper, and start my self contained tour.  I plan to use ACA's maps of the Great Parks, Northern Tier, and Pacific Coast.  I plan on a starting date of mid July, 2010 and plan on taking 2 to 3 months.  I plan on camping most of the time.  If anyone has done this trip before and wants to give advice, your comments are welcome.

Thanks

General Discussion / Tips on keeping a touring group together
« on: September 01, 2009, 04:24:34 pm »
Has anyone organized or ridden with a group for a long period of time.  If so, can you share the problems you had keeping everyone happy and together for the entire trip?

I'm joining a group doing a self supported tour next summer of the TransAm east to west and am a little worried about the group getting along for 3 months.

Gear Talk / Chris King rear hub skips when pedaling after coasting
« on: May 30, 2009, 03:59:20 pm »
Has anyone had this problem.  Its more of an annoyance than anything else, however, I'm worried that it might get worse.  And, it is an expensive hub.  It has about 6,000 miles on it, 3300 touring the L&C trail.

I hope it can be repaired, because it has been great up to now.

Thanks

General Discussion / Osteoporosis and long distance cyclists
« on: February 20, 2009, 04:31:52 pm »
Does anyone share this situation with me?  In June 2004, just before my start of the L&C trail, I cracked a tooth eating a sandwich that had small seeds in the bread.  The tooth was pulled and I completed the trip.  Then, a few years later, another tooth cracked.  Yes, it had to be pulled, also.  My chiropractor sent my to get a bone scan and to my surprize, I was dianosed with SEVERE osteoporosis.  Other tests confirmed my low bone density.  I'm taking a calcium supplement plus eating more dairy products along with weight lifting and some jogging.  I hope to test myself again soon to see if things are improving.  Anyway, I've read that long distance bicycle riding can cause this problem.  Any thoughts are appreciated.
