General Discussion / Tree Fort Bikes/ Good company
« on: June 20, 2013, 02:46:10 pm »
Gotta give a shout out to this company. I purchased a salsa fargo from them some time ago without inspecting it. Long after the warranty was expired I set it up to find out it had 2 major parts that were damaged which made the bike unable to be ridden. I wrote them about it and they promptly sent me the new parts, no cost. Thats a company that prides itself on customer satisfaction. Im very impressed.

Gear Talk / 29er vs 26
« on: September 27, 2012, 08:49:08 am »
Was wondering if my 29er 32 spoked wheels are as strong as my old bike with 26inch wheels. Cant remember the # of spkokes. Maybe 36. Ive loaded the 26 up with full panniers many times and they havent failed me yet. The # of spokes and larger wheel size just has me wondering if the difference is  something to think about as far as the weight limit it can handle. Thanks.

General Discussion / texting
« on: December 15, 2011, 10:38:44 am »
As I mostly bicycle secondary roads and rails to trails I dont have to worry about it so much but Im really becoming concerned about how much the risk of riding the roads has increased due to people texting while driving. Im aware that bicycling roads is inherently a risk but with more news all the time that texting was going on and was a major factor in an accident it sure has me thinking.I will not quit riding but Im hoping maybe some laws will be in place to limit or prevent this texting and driving issue. In the meantime I guess a person just has to stay aware and alert while bicycling popular roads.

General Discussion / finishing
« on: February 04, 2011, 11:00:13 am »
I know its the journey and not the destination and Im not using this as a mile marker gauge but Im curious at what point in the east to west trans am did it suddenly sink in that you actually realized you were going to finish the entire ride, coast to coast. How did it feel?

Gear Talk / vintage cannondale
« on: August 01, 2010, 12:11:19 pm »
Just bought either a 1986 or 87 cannondale sm 600 or 800 (not sure) for $200 thats never been ridden. Its been stored off the ground all these years. The owner said he paid $800.00 new.Being this old of a bike is it just an outdated bike with outdated components or does it have vintage value? I didnt think I could go wrong at $200. Opinions?

General Discussion / Hamstrings
« on: January 19, 2009, 03:48:48 pm »
I read a lot about knee concerns during a long tour but I never read about people having hamstring issues. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem   and did it hamper or even stop the tour. thanks.

Gear Talk / REAR CASSETTE
« on: May 06, 2007, 11:11:12 am »
I CHANGED OUT MY INNER SPROCKET FROM A 30 TO A 24 FOR LOWER GEARING WHICH HAS BEEN A NICE IMPROVEMENT HOWEVER I WOULD LIKE TO TWEEK IT JUST A BIT MORE. MY REAR IS 11-32.WOULD CHANGING IT TO 11-34 MAKE ENOUGH DIFFERENCE TO DO IT AND/OR WOULD IT MESS UP THE DERAILER. MY KNEES WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE. THANKS.

Gear Talk / gear comparison
« on: November 29, 2006, 05:54:23 pm »
My touring bicycle triple chainring is 52/42/24 with 11/32 (9cassette),700c wheels. My hybrid is 44/32/22 with 11/30 (7cassette),26in. wheels. In theory how do these gearings compare and in what way if they were both used for touring.

Gear Talk / TIRE LINERS

Looking for opinions on tire liners vs. just purchasing the best tire you can for a long distance ride. Would both be overkill?

Gear Talk / CHAIN RING QUESTION
« on: October 18, 2006, 09:21:17 am »
I need a big drop in gearing on my touring bike without putting major money in it. Its set up with 52/42/30 and 11/32 cassette in the back.My LOB has a 24 inner chainring with a chain watcher he would put on it.He said that should work, just be careful dropping into the 24 . Low enough? I ride mountain roads in West Virginia and I dont have young legs.
