Routes / Ride the Divide new Jasper addition?
« on: September 14, 2018, 11:59:41 am »
Hi all

i apologize in advance if I missed  any comments.  I was just wondering if there was feedback on the new Jasper section of the Divide Trail yet.  Is the scenery as spectacular as the Icefields Parkway?

Routes / TA vs Northern tier
« on: August 21, 2017, 11:00:56 pm »
Sorry to  beat a dead horse, but I am trying to convince a friend or two to ride a C to C summer of 2018.  I know the question has been  posted before, and I know the answer is it depends.  But I have not had much luck finding recent info on the TA vs NT.  In the past it seems like I read a several responses that indicated the NT had more expensive camping, fewer cyclists and maybe was not as cyclist friendly.  Just wondering if anyone with recent experiences has on opinion?

Gear Talk / Trek 520 wobble
« on: May 30, 2012, 01:32:03 pm »
I have a 2008 Trek 520 with a unicrown fork.  When I tour I use front and rear panniers and handlebar bag.  The front rack is a lowrider.  I love the bike with one exception, when it is loaded it seems to have a slight wobble that feels like it is located in the front.  It only occurs when I pedal,  no wobble on fast down hills, or unloaded.  The problem is minor, but still irritating.  Am I justified in thinking another fork would help, if so any recommendations?

Routes / Good alternate to cross Oregon?
« on: May 25, 2011, 01:44:13 am »
I am planning on doing Seattle to Portland ride this year, and would like to take an extra week or so and also ride home (Boise ID).  Just was hoping to get some feedback on alternate routes.  I have rode the ACA route through John Day so would like to do something different.  Is highway 58 from Eugene to Oakridge a good ride?  Also has anyone rode highway 380 from Prineville to Paulina and points west? if so how was it?

The rest I think I have figured out.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Gear Talk / moving bar end shifters?
« on: February 10, 2011, 07:45:50 pm »
Does anyone know if the internal washers on a bar end shifter will fit on a down tube shifter boss?  I have a Trek 520 which has 9 speed bar end shifters, and I would like to move them to the down tube shifter bosses if possible.  I want to install treking bars, or flat bars with bar ends on this bike and I like the way those shifters work so would like to save them.  I haven't been able to find other indexed down tube shifters (other than dura ace) and don't want to sped that much at this point. Any info or ideas would be much appreciated.

Routes / North Washington state vs BC Canada
« on: July 27, 2010, 10:05:16 am »
Help please.  I can't believe I haven't made up my mind.  My tour starts very soon (next Monday) and most of the route is decided.  I have been on the North Cascades highway in Washington before and enjoyed the route very much, but I can"t help but wonder if a trip through Canada is calling my name.  My trip will start in Idaho and includes Glacier Waterton Park, the Selkirk Loop, the San Juans, Washington and Oregon Coast. I am not familiar with routes in south BC, but am curious if there is a decent, maybe spectacular stretch of road from say Nelson in the Selkirks to the San Juan islands.  Anyone have suggestions?  Thanks for any help.

Routes / Just wondering about northwestern California
« on: June 01, 2010, 12:43:35 am »
Just wondering if anyone is familiar with highway 96 in N.W. California?  I was considering this as an option to head back to Bend, and points beyond after a tour of the Oregon coast and into northern CA.  Any other options that would be better?  Thanks for any help.

I have been considering this route as part of a tour.  The last time I was on this road was 2003 and in a car.  It seemed busy, and had narrow spots with no shoulders.  I was wondering if anyone knows if they did some improvements to this road for the olympics?

Hi, I am planning a tour that will include the Vancouver B.C. area.  I will also catch the ferry to Prince Rupert, and ride the Yellowhead to Jasper.  Then down to Banf,  and Glacier Park MT.  It looks like I should be prepared for rain.  Some of the journals I have read indicated that (sometimes lots of rain).  Travel time will be about the middle of July to the middle of Sept.  My question is what works well?  Fenders, pants, shoe covers, etc?

Routes / Best route from Bend OR to Medford?
« on: March 28, 2009, 02:08:39 pm »
I am going to ride Cycle Oregon this Sept. and thought it might be fun to take some additional time and ride to the start line instead of transporting my equipment by automobile.  I will start in Boise ID and would like to ride to Bend Oregon, then south to Medford.  The route to Bend is familiar to me, but I don't have a clue about roads south from there.  Does anyone have ideas for a good route from Bend to Medford?

Gear Talk / Where should the weight go?
« on: January 28, 2009, 01:08:19 am »
I am considering another cross country tour and am interested in trying racks vs my bob trailer.  Seems like, at one point,  I read some info that suggests that more weight should be placed in the front panniers. True or not? has anyone tried that, how did the bike handle. better?  If so why are rear bags so large compared to front?  Just wondering.

Gear Talk / Should I buy a bent?
« on: July 19, 2007, 08:47:10 pm »
I know that is a question that I have to answer myself, but I am intrigued and find myself wanting one every time I read an article (such as might be found in Adventure Cyclist) about recumbents.  I have several road bikes, a tandem and a mountain bike, and I love riding all of them, but wonder about the advantages and also disadvantages of a bent. I live in Boise and do not see very many here so don't have the opportunity to talk with owners.  I saw only two on my TransAm tour and both riders said they were more work in the hills, are there other disadvantages?  I like the idea of a bike I can do long rides on in relative comfort, but they seem expensive and I would like some idea of what to expect before I make the plunge.

Gear Talk / 29er for The Great Divide?
« on: June 17, 2007, 02:15:35 am »
Anyone have experience riding a 29 inch wheeled mountain bike.  I have done some touring on road bikes, and quite a bit of mountain bike riding, and now I have the itch to do some mountain bike touring.  I was considering building up a Surly Karate Monkey with drop bars and no suspension (basically a cross bike that I could put really wide tires on).  By the way I have a bob trailer, so rack fit is not an issue.  Any thoughts?

Routes / Out in the sticks

Hey friends, has anyone out there been over hwy 20 in British Columbia between Bella Coola and Williams Lake? I think I read that it was paved (or mostly paved).  How was it?

Routes / British Columbia Routes
« on: August 29, 2006, 12:59:35 am »
I am planning a ride in Canada summer 2007 but know little of some of the roads.  I think I would like to travel Banff to Kamloops to Jasper on the Yellowhead highway and back to Banff via the Icefields parkway.  I have seen the Parkway and think it is wonderfull, but how about the rest of my route?  Are the roads ok for riding or are there better choices?  Any info, or suggestions, would be appreciated.
