General Discussion / How to Blog? Crazyguyonabike?
« on: April 28, 2013, 10:17:48 am »
I expect this has been discussed before but, can anyone either explain or direct me to an explanation for novices about blogging and why Crazyguyonabike is so popular and how does it work? Having looked at Crazyguyonabike home, there is just so much volume of information, how do you sift through to find something relevant to one's interest yet not be overwhelmed by the choice? How do you know where to look? Then, if deciding to start a blog, how does one place it in Crazyguyonabike so that it can be found? Why is Crazyguyonabike preferable to, say

Connecting ACA Routes / Tucson - Antelope Wells
« on: September 08, 2011, 02:36:48 pm »
Completed Gt Divide last week and Tucson seemed to be the nearest international airport for return home so rode out that way. There seemed good potential there but unfortuanately a route through Chiricahua Park was closed after fire and flood danger. Still had a good camp at Cave Canyon (Peter Hands camp) then went around via San Simone but didn't seem to be able to avoid I10 between Bowie and Wilcox.
Anybody else got suggestions for finishes to Gt Divide?

Routes / Gt Divide Basin
« on: July 23, 2011, 11:52:38 pm »
Just approaching the Gt Divide Basin. Planning for stopovers.
Anybody got recent news of water availability at R&M Reservoir?
With the high snows the past winter I'm expecting water levels to be ok.
Getting a little annoyed by mosquito bites to the butt. Might have to resort to deet spraying clothes. Will mozzies be bad out in the basin too?

Routes / Recent Gt Divide news

Just if anybody wants to know.
Elk Pass, Flathead Pass, Cabin and Galton are quite clear, Whitefish divide not much but Red Meadow Lake still quite snowy.
Side tack, Logane pass you can ride to about 2.5miles above the big bend, doesn't look like there's much access to the rim and should be clear soon but not allowed. check for more detail

Routes / Gt Divide Snow
« on: May 03, 2011, 05:10:53 am »
I've just been watching Tour Divide film/DVD. There were some passes with quite a bit of snow in mid June. An interview with Matthew Lee gave an impression the snow levels were remarkable and he seemed to have much experience.
I was just wondering if there are forum readers who know what sort of a winter the Rockies has had this year. How are the snow levels comparing to previous years? Is the spring coming sooner/later/warmer/colder this time?

Gear Talk / Wi Fi and charging points on GD
« on: March 11, 2011, 04:59:19 am »
I am planning GDMBR this summer and probably will have an I-phone as camera and communication device. Roaming charges for a European might mean the network connection will be switched off except in emergencies and what is the coverage like anyway? What I wanted to ask about is,
How common are Wi Fi sites and re-charging points for campers? It would be least stuff to carry if I could charge by USB port but should I carry a mains adaptor too? If I get an unlocked phone could you suggest which sim card and networks might be best to buy over there?

I am a Brit planning Gt Divide this summer. I was thinking an I-phone or equivalent for emergency communication with additional features like, camera, MP3 player, radio, GPS, e-mail, blogging, diary etc would be a gadget well worth having. I have never owned a cell phone before but enquired in uk recently.
It seemed that roaming charges would make taking a phone from home unafforable. It has been suggested I just get a phone over there when I go or get one here but make it compatible with north american networks and sim cards.
Does anyone have advice on models, features, costs, feasibility and experience using one? How long batteries last and anybody used a power monkey solar charger?

I just read in addenda that alternative route Gros Ventre River Road, Darwin Ranch, and Kinky Creek is not viable. Is there further information about this anywhere? Can "not viable" be defined more accurately. It sounded like quite a challenging adventure.

Routes / GD south of Cuba
« on: November 07, 2010, 04:34:08 pm »
Planning for GD next summer. I spoke to someone who did it this summer and said there was a part of the route in New Mexico south of Cuba which was closed because of a private land owner.
Is there any further information about this on the ACA site anywhere or can someone give advice.

Routes / Gt Divide ground conditions
« on: October 08, 2010, 05:12:47 pm »
Being English I often come across wet muddy conditions and ride much of the year with mudguards.
A long ride under a wet spray from the back wheel would lessen my enjoyment of a tour.
I'm expecting dust on the Divide in summer but I saw some photographs of bikes which had completed the Gt Divide race. They looked quite muddy.
I'll be going much slower in fact I'm intending 1 in 3 days off for distractions and I could just wait for wet days to pass.
Can riders who have completed the route inform how many wet days there were please?
Are there places where mudguards would be worth taking?

Routes / Gt Divide N to S open from?
« on: September 29, 2010, 06:03:13 am »
I'm hoping to do Gt Divide next summer starting from Banff and I have lots of questions. I could be laid back and just go but forwarned is forarmed
I'd like to start mid-late June and finish early Sept.
Can anybody advise what the state of the tracks will be, I'm wondering about whether snow on the higher levels and when it usually clears. Any advice on other hazards and highlights not to miss?
Also I'm coming from England and considering the logistics.
I thought I might fly to Edmonton and ride accross to Jasper and down to Banff by road to get into the routine before starting the offroad route. Route advice anyone? Alternatives?
It looks like Tucson might be a reasonable return airport.
How tough are the procedures for entry to USA. As a British passport holder I have acquired a visa waiver but it does say that it does not guarantee entry. What kind of assurances are they looking for?
I'm intending to be independant to follow my own schedule and whims but also would like to ride some of the time with other adventure cyclist's. How many people are doing the ride and when do most set off.
