Classifieds / touring shoes
« on: November 11, 2005, 08:21:00 pm »
I am relative new to touring but not to cycling.  My issue this time is touring shoes.  I have some mt. bike shoes with spd cleates but there is got to be something a little better when these. What is are you seasoned tourers wearing?

Gear Talk / Schrader vs Presta
« on: November 11, 2007, 08:25:20 pm »
I did a search and didn't find any discussion on this so I can ask.  Many of you who have done long tours what is your preference between the two valves.  I have modified my mountain bike to Schraders and now I'm looking at my touring bike wheels and considering  doing the same. What is the general consensus.

Gear Talk / tools

What tools do you carry on tour to work on your bike? I followed one list and it weighed about 5 lbs. just for them. I don't want to take to many but I don't want to be stuck because I left my adjustable wrench home.

Gear Talk / Trek R200
« on: December 24, 2006, 01:39:20 am »
A couple of years ago my wife bought this recumbent with good intentions but alas it has become a dust collector.  Though I am somewhat a traditionalist when it come to bikes I keep looking at it and wonder if I should give it a spin. I'm in my bicycle maintenace mode this time of year and it bothers me to see this noble steed just sit.  The 40 some gears it has facinates me and I think I'd like to see what it is like going up a hill. Anyone else have this Trek?

Gear Talk / Hub generator

This has been more then likely brought up before but does anyone out there use them.  I'm thinking about building a wheel with one and would like to know how they perform? Shimano looks like a good unit.

Gear Talk / cables
« on: September 15, 2006, 11:57:47 pm »
I have a question how many of the riders out there have broken a cable?  I'm not talking about being off road and have a branch or log grab it but actually shifting and have it break. I guess I should include break cables as well. This falls in the category of what spare parts should you carry.

Gear Talk / air pressure

I did an over night ride on the Iron Horse trail here in Washington.  The trail is what I call hard pack with loose rocks.  It is a good trail.  My question is with this type of riding would it be better to lower the pressure in the tires?  I didn't this ride and had no problem however I am doing a much longer ride on this trail later next month.  I'm using Schwalbe marathons 700x35's recommended pressure 85psi.

Gear Talk / Straight handlebars
« on: May 31, 2006, 03:21:33 pm »
I have drop bars on both my road bike as well as my touring bike and have gone with the popular theory that they are better then straight.  However, I keep seeing photographs of riders doing these epic rides using straight bars. So what's the deal?

« on: March 11, 2006, 06:40:39 pm »
I am now have a carbon seat post for my touring bike.  Now that I have it I'm not sure why I have it.  Does anyone out there use carbon posts on tour?

Gear Talk / solar battery charger

I have one of these and was thinking about using it on tour to keep camera batteries charged.  Anyone ever use one of these?

Gear Talk / Chain rings
« on: December 29, 2005, 07:31:56 pm »
Originaly On my Cannondale T2000 I had 52/42/30.  I changed that to a 48/39/30 however after reading some of the discussions I'm beginning to think that the 30t is a little tall for touring.  I can go to a 28t or 26t chainring but my real question is will there be shifting problems using this small of a chain ring?

Gear Talk / Schwalbe
« on: December 17, 2005, 12:14:08 am »
Since I seem to have a tire fetish these last few days I was wondering how well the Schwalbe tires hold up.  I just bought a pair and now I'm doing the research on them. Oh well it must be the season.

Gear Talk / spare tire
« on: December 11, 2005, 11:00:29 pm »
Very good discussions on the rear wheel in this forum which leads me now to think about the rubber on these wheels.  The tires I am using are not really foldables so that kind of rules them out as far as being used as a spare. In this case which tire would work best as a spare?
