The Routes & Mapping staff of Adventure Cycling have started a program to improve its offering of digital data and maps that will help with navigation using GPS and mobile devices using:
  • Higher resolution tracks that follow roads & trails. They will offer a clear representation of the routes to follow with little or no processing after downloading it from our library.
  • Digital copies of our popular paper maps that are tagged with their geographic location. On compatible GPS & mobile devices, you can see your location on the maps.
Would you like to help us test these new digital products along the Northern Tier Route? Learn more about the program & apply at Geopoints Bulletin announcement.

Details on Garmin blog.

For over two years now, I had been expecting such a device. It is packed with features:
  • 3-axis compass with accelerometer and gyro
  • Barometric altimeter
  • UV sensor
  • Dual-band GPS and GLONASS receiver
  • 8-megapixel digital camera
  • IPX7 waterproof
  • Dual battery system: rechargeable Li-ion pack (included) or traditional AA batteries
  • WiFi, ANT+, Bluetooth 3.0 and NFC
  • Android spectrum of apps
Available third quarter 2013 at a suggested retail price of $649.99.

It is missing a few features still: heart rate monitor & bluetooth 4. I should better start saving for the next release of the Edge series with app support.

This is an Android phone app for navigating routes created with Ride with GPS route planner.

Alas, there is no iPhone version of it just yet. Those with Android phone, please post your feedback of this app. It is free unless you want the premium features.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Garmin Connect offers heat maps

This is a great step in the right direction of using all the data they have been collecting. The coverage is starting in certain areas while expanding to others.

It color codes routes by usage frequency.

How cool is that!

General Discussion / Images are not appearing in ACA forum post
« on: June 02, 2012, 11:10:19 am »
I have attached images to a post on the ACA forum at
http://www.adventurecycling.org/forums/index.php?topic=9892.0

I noticed these images do not appear unless I am logged in. If I logout, I can see all the text entries in the post, but cannot see the images.

Is that by design? Is there something I need to do to enable the images to appear all the time?

I am trying to load POIs onto the Edge 705.

POI Loader recognized the unit, created the POI directory, and placed the GPI file. But the unit does not seem to recognize the file, as I do not see the points on the map, nor get any alerts near them.

According to Garmin support team, and the POI Loader web site (http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/), custom POIs work only on Outdoor and Automotive products.

Did you get them to work on your Garmin fitness product?

1. I downloaded the Atlantic Coast GPX file yesterday. The file was stamped with MapSource 6.12.2. Is this correct?

2. If so, how do you save them? I found it strange that the route appeared as straight lines on my Edge 705. I have used MapSource before and it worked fine with the Edge. With the latest ACA route, I had to import it to Garmin BaseCamp, recalculate, and save back to the Edge.

What do you use to create the routes?

I have used my Garmin Edge in the US, Europe, Middle East, and East Asia without problems. Reception seems as strong as ever, indicating accuracy of about 3m.

Have you had problems with satellite signal reception when traveling outside the US? Where?

I am planning a trip to Japan's Shikoku island to bicycle the 88 temple pilgrimage route. My Gamin Edge 705 does not have Japan map on it.

What tools do you use to chart the route? What type of data do you store the file in: route, track, or course? What problems have you had?

I plan to use an online mapping service, like ridewithgps.com. Once the route is complete, I will transfer it as GPX track.

I tested this in the US and seems to work. I removed the maps from the unit. Charted a route. And tried to navigate it.

Everything worked fine. I was able to follow the route without problems. Instead of specific prompts, like "turn right on Main Street", the GPS displayed more generic ones like "Go South". And of course there was no map in the background.

What is your experience with using the GPS without a map?

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / GPS accuracy controversy
« on: December 22, 2011, 12:01:56 am »
Many are picking up on NYT article about unreliable GPS receivers:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/20/health/nutrition/gps-watches-may-not-track-runs-accurately.html

The AMC is not surprised:
http://equipped.outdoors.org/2011/12/how-accurate-is-gps-watch.html

Ray Maker strongly disagrees:
http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2011/12/why-new-york-times-gps-running-article.html

The author of the article, Ms Kolata, does not say where the route was, the density of trees, the surrounding high rises of NYC, or weather conditions. These can cause major distraction to the GPS signal.

I use the Edge 705 on my bicycle. The altimeter is more random than the stock market. But the distance has very small error. For example, here are a few rides I charted and recorded:

122.28km GPS vs 123.7km map (98.9%)
76.6km GPS vs 76.8km map (99.7%)
113.2km GPS vs 111.5km map (101.5%)
36.8km GPS vs 36.9km map (99.7%)

This works for me.

Routes / Atlantic route: north or south?
« on: July 12, 2009, 02:16:00 pm »
I am planning a tour between Washington and key West this fall in October.

Should I go north or south? I am mostly curious about the wind direction.

Also, any experience with riding that route at this time?

Has anyone found a reliable camera with built-in GPS, or at least connects easily to an external GPS?
