Routes / Logistics for the Lake Michigan Ferry-Manitowoc, WI to Ludinton, MI and back.

I am planning a tour from western WI to central MI.  I plan on using the ferry to cross Lake Michigan.

I will be staying with family in Green Bay and will travel one day to Manitowoc.  I doubt I would make the 1:55PM ferry so would have to wait for the 12:00AM one.  Is there somewhere near the ferry to spend some down time?  Same thing on the other side in Ludington.  I am not sure if I would travel beyond Ludington as soon as I finish the crossing, and need a place to hang out or camp.

By chance are there parks near the ferry station that one could safely catch a nap?

My daughter and I stopped here last year as we were passing through.  Don gave us a tour of the place and told us of his plans to add some kitchen equipment and a shower.  He did.  Although we did not spend the night, we rode with a couple that had.

Routes / Minnesota Circle tour on the Northern Tier - traffic

I am thinking of purchasing maps 5 & 6 from the Northern Tier and creating a circle tour of central & northern MN.  The description does indicate heavy traffic as you approach Grand Rapids.  How heavy is that, and, for how many miles?  And, how good is the shoulder?

BTW - I live just east of Osceola, WI and can jump on the NT at Osceola.  Anybody needing a stop for a day or so should contact me.

I am beginning to plan my tour beginning in Silverdale, WA heading back to Wisconsin riding a section of the Washington Parks, then the Northern Tier.  I am trying to get a handle on the time it will take.  I have some basic and preliminary questions and if you could assist me it would be greatly appreciated.

In General, how long does it take an average tourist to travel from the coast to Cut Bank, MT?  Are we talking three weeks, two weeks?

Routes / Sioux Falls, South Dakota - to West Central Wisconsin

I have a friend that has some business to attend to next week in the Rosebud area of South Dakota.  I may go along for the ride and get dropped off on the way back somewhere east of Sioux Falls.  This would give me an opportunity for a short tour.

I have only traveled from Eau Claire Wisconsin to Sioux Falls using the Interstate.  Anybody have comments on the availability of safe paved routes in the area?

I would like to reenter Wisconsin at Red Wing, MN or Wabasha, MN.

Routes / The Natchez Trace Parkway in January or February

A friend told me about the Parkway this evening.  Does anybody have any ideas about conditions for a self supported trip in January or Feb?  Being from Wisconsin, I have the impression that all weather is great in the south during these months.  But I thought it best to ask as I may be wrong.

General Discussion / Tour Planning - Ten months out

Hi

I am beginning the process of planning a tour that will begin in mid May of 09.  It is now late August of 08.

I have never toured and seek advice on where to begin planning a tour from Wisconsin to Washington state.  I am 58 years old and am retired.  I currently have no travel partner but will attempt to find one.

I will need almost all of the equipment for a self contained tour.  I will need almost all specialized clothing. I will camp most of the time and cook most of my own meals.

Given that scenario and time line, how would you begin preparations?
