Routes / Columbus, OH to Pittsburg, PA to Philly

Hi all

I am doing the route planning for the Health Awareness TourHealth Awareness Tour from San Diego to Ocean City, NJ starting Jun 26th.

The Adventure Cycling routes did not exactly meet the team's objectives, so I used the RAAM 03/04 route through Dayton, OH. From there, I just made my best guess.

If anyone has any route recommendations that follow the same basic flow through the major cities, I would appreciate it. The current route is at HAT05.CRAZYGUYONABIKE.COM

In addition, I would appreciate any detail on traveling west to east through Pittsburg.

General Discussion / Freeway Biking

Out west there are many areas where you can bike on freeways as that is the only road available. I have only ridden on a freeway once for about 6 miles and found it terrible. The noise and wind were slightly tolerable; but the shoulder was in bad shape and contained more debris than any street shoulder that I have been on. Every nut, bolt, screw, nail, staple, etc., was piled there and unavoidable. As I exited, I found I had a flat.

The other day I heard someone mention how much he enjoyed riding on the freeway. I didn't get a chance to challenge him, so I will ask here....

Has anyone ever found bicycling on a freeway to be acceptable?

General Discussion / Adv Cycling Maps and Water

I just received my first set of Adventure Cycling maps and like them a lot.

However, I have a question concerning water availability.

Based on the various map symblols, can one make any assumptions regarding the availability of water. It is obvious that water would be available at locations respresented by restaurants, motels, hostels, etc. symbols. But, for example, can one assume water is available at all "rest room" symbols?

I will be on the Western Express and the map warns of water shortages, no support for xx miles, etc. However, I was hoping for something more precise such as "Joe's gas station is only place to get water in the of XYZ."
