Connecting ACA Routes / Dayton OH to Sunset Beach NC

I'm planning a trip from Dayton, OH to Sunset Beach, NC (right on the No. SO. Carolina border).

I looked at using the Trans American Route from Bera, KY east to Richmond, VA and then pick up the Atlantic Coast route south from there but it appears to be several hundred miles longer.

Can anyone offer a more direct route or resources for mapping my own route? Any advise regarding riding through KY, Virginia and No. Carolina?

I'm sure this topic has been discussed many times in the past however; I haven't seen any of it.

What tent are you using on your extended trips (10+ days)? I'm looking for a lightweight, double wall, free-standing, 1+ person tent to pack on a BOB Trailer.

There are many choices out there; just interested in what your experiences have been.

Routes / Routes & Elevation changes

I just discovered a new tool to use when planning a route. It doesn't cost anything and it provides some good basic information .

If you want to see what a road may look like do a google search for "Google Earth". You can download a program that enables you to look at a road, etc from above but also tilt the view to get a pespective of the elevation changes.

Pretty cool stuff!

Routes / Mt. Rogers Nat'l Rec. Area, VA

I've recieved several suggestions on a route from Fairborn, OH to Sunset Beach, NC.

The most interesting takes me SOutheast through Ohio crossing at Portsmouth then Souteast through Kentucky towards Damascus, VA. From there it takes me East through the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area on route 58/603/76.

Has anyone ridden this road(58/603/76)? If so what might I expect regarding elevation and type of road (shoulder, etc).

Routes / Lewis & Clark in 2007

My 60th birthday present to myself (some say it's to my wife) is to do the L&C in one trip. I've read the AC book "Bicycling the L&C Trail" three times already and wonder what kind of daily mileage I can realistically expect to accomplish. This trip is about the journey not the destination.

I am currently riding 125 miles/week (over three days)unloaded.

Any recommendations related to the L&C are greatly appreciated.

Not that I'm anxiuos to go - I've already started compiling my list of items! Categorically: Bike, Parts, Clothing, Shelter (Camping no motels), Food, and Misc.

Friends have asked, "How are you getting back home?" Didn't think of that till today. Amtrak seems like it might be a good way to slowly come back to reality (Dayton, OH).
