General Discussion / How would you have handled this dog episode?
« on: April 25, 2011, 11:04:50 am »
I'm planning a Trans-Am trip to begin later this year and my biggest concern is loose dogs. (One of my earliest memories is of a loose doberman knocking me off my first bike and biting me when I was 7 years old. So started a bad relationship with dogs...)

Anyway, I've read all the recommendations posted here and elsewhere. And I've gotten to be pretty successful at dealing with 1-2 loose dogs at a time. But yesterday I was out riding and came upon four dogs gathered together in the middle of a desolate road. As I approached, I realized they had every angle on me. I was at a point where I could turn around and try outsprinting them, so that's just what I did. But I know that won't always be an option on the Trans-Am.

Just curious to know how others would've handled the same situation.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Another newbie setup question
« on: March 21, 2011, 01:51:03 pm »
First off, thanks to everyone who posts such great information here. I've been planning my TransAm tour for almost a year and have been reading the posts here during that time.

Of course, thanks to all that reading, I'm as confused as ever!

I've purchased the ACA maps and they'll certainly be the base for my navigation. The main reason I'm interested in a GPS unit is I'd like to think it will help me avoid some of the dreaded missed turns that seem to befall every tour rider. In addition, it'd be nice to leave the maps in my pack, rather than having them on the handlebars.

Here are my details: biking the TransAm east to west...meeting up with my non-cyclist wife each evening, as she drives from place to place...the GPS will be used strictly on the bike, not in a car...I'll have daily access to a Mac laptop...don't care about topography.

It seems like the eTrex Legend HCx might be a good fit. But the 60CSx also sounds good. And the eTrex Vista. And, well, you get the idea.

Guess I'm just looking for someone to say that any of the above will work.

Thanks!
