Routes / Route from Globe, Az
« on: April 22, 2012, 12:01:01 am »
My wife and I are touring across the country right now. We are currently in Tempe, Az and want to get up to Pueblo, Co for our next leg of the trip. From Pueblo we will pick up the TransAm and finish in Washington DC.
My question is if anyone has any experience or information on the route from Globe, Az going north on the 60 / 77. There are two small towns on the route, but I'm concerned about services (and water), and road conditions. If we go south from Globe it's the AC Southern tier, but I want to head north through New Mexico and I think it would be a bit farther to use the AC route. Any advice? We have a rest day tomorrow but will be back on the road Monday.

Thanks,
Wazzo

Gear Talk / bike maintenance on tour
« on: January 18, 2012, 02:52:05 pm »
I was wondering what people do for basic bike maintenance while on an extended tour. We all know how messy a bike can get and it's bad enough cleaning them in the garage with a supply of rags and cleaners. I can't imagine carrying those things on the bike. I suppose you could just turn it over to a bike shop occasionally, but that doesn't seem like the best approach either. Any thoughts?

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / empty files when I try to download GPS data
« on: September 29, 2011, 11:18:19 pm »
My wife and I are planning a cross country trip next year and are busy planning and discussing different routes. We've bought all the AC maps and studied them some, but now I would like to download the GPS data. this is where the problem starts. When I go to the AC map list and pick a route, then go through the steps to download and look at the details of the files it shows there is zero data in them, except one Adobe file that doesn't seem at all relevant. What am I doing wrong?
I have a Garmin 605 but I don't think that matters at this point!

Thanks!

Gear Talk / Rohloff hub
« on: May 25, 2011, 07:22:55 pm »
Does anyone see a downside to switching from a chain to a belt drive for the Rohloff hub? I have a Co-Motion Americano with the Rohloff, and everything I've heard about the belt drive sounds positive. My wife and I will be doing a modified TransAm next year and I thought adding the belt would make my bike as trouble free as possible.
