Routes / st from phoenix starting March 1th, 2012
« on: December 18, 2011, 09:18:04 am »
I am considering traveling from Phoenix, AZ starting March 1st, 2012 and riding the southern tier to Texas where my brother lives and having him bring me back home when he visits me later that month.  If anyone is traveling at that time or would like to come along let me know.  Doing around 60 each day depending on the weather and conditions, camping, hostels and maybe a hotel or two and just enjoying the ride.  I am 60 years old and in good shape but extra company would be great, I will be pulling a trailer with all my gear gear.    Also I can adjust a few days either way so if you can, or you will be on the route before or a couple days later let me know.  Forrest

Gear Talk / tourning with different size tires front and back
« on: September 16, 2011, 03:45:12 pm »
I am towing a trailer and just switched to 700x28 tires on my bike (the trailer tires is 16x1.75) and this made a huge difference in control from the 700x23 I was running.  My question is has anyone during touring used different size tires on the front and back.  If you have is it better to use a large one on the rear and keep the 28 on the front.  I am not using panniers just a trailer and there is not weight issue.  Also if you have used different air pressure between the two.  I have been told that a larger on on the front may give me a few problems with corners.  Please let me know if you have any experience with this.  Thanks

Routes / southern route from el centro to blyth or el centro to yuma
« on: August 21, 2011, 11:23:19 pm »
I am going to ride from San Diego Phoenix this October and I am trying to find out which way is the safest once I get to  El Centro.  Either El Centro to Yuma then to Quartzite or El Centro to Blythe then through Quartzite.  Are you able to ride on I8 to Yuma from El Centro or is there a frontage road.  If you have ridden these routes let me know and if you have an recommendation for either and what you experience was.  Thanks

Gear Talk / cargo trailers
« on: August 21, 2011, 10:58:23 am »
I am new to cross country touring.  I am going to purchase a trailer, after reading about panniers vs trailers it seem that it is a personal thing.  I have talked to and seen riders with both and just as many problem happen with both.  So if you have one of the following trailers or have used more than one please give me you thoughts on them.   I am looking at the following trailers, the Maya, Bobs yak, Topeak, and a new one once called Adventure ct1.  also if you have used a single and or a double let me know.  I am leaning towards the single wheel as it looks like the double can tip over easy. Please give me your honest take and not a bunch of why I should not have a trailer I have already ruled out panniers except for front one to help balance out the bike.  I have a scattante roma hybrid that I will be riding.  Please let me know any trouble you have had and what you may change on the trailer Thanks.

General Discussion / foods for road trip
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:23:35 pm »
Taking a road trip where there are not many stores along the way.  What type of non perishable foods are good and have a lot of carbs to keep me going doing about 60-70 miles per day.  I don't want to take cooking equipment, stove or such items that will weigh me down.  I only am pulling a single wheel trailer with 70lb capacity.   Any suggestions would be welcomed.  thanks
