General Discussion / Travellingfoxes Epic Cycle Adventure USA 2014
« on: April 25, 2014, 10:31:11 pm »
Gday guys

Firstly we want to thank EVERYONE who has made the time to answer any one of our numerous tedious questions we have posted over the past few months!

We ended up flying over from Australia in march 27 then flew to Boston April 15 and have set up base at a friends place in Lincoln, MA. We had everything owned and bought shipped to their house and have put everything together over the past week. The Novara Safaris ride like a tank but are smooth and handle great with bob trailers!

We have decided on a start date of May 1 (bit nipply) - but we reckon we can suck it up for the first few weeks and are going to start our adventure in Bar Harbor and then make our way predominately across the Northern Tier (with a few detours). With all stars aligning we will then head from Vancouver down to Mexico via the Pacific Coast route with a couple of detours via the Sierra Cascades route. We are allowing 6 months and camping most of the way and using Warm Showers here and there.

If anyone is interested in following our 'by the seat of pants adventure' feel free to follow us on our blog at http://travellingfoxes68.wordpress.com.

Enjoy! and again a sincere Thankyou to you all.

Times getting closer, and we are wondering what recommendations are out there as to what are the 'must need' tools to take on the road.

Again thankyou all for your continued words of wisdom!

Thankyou all again soooo much for your words of wisdom.

General Discussion / Any eleventh hour opinions! Novara Bike choice.
« on: March 03, 2014, 03:25:03 am »
Gday guys

We have finally narrowed our decision of bike choice for our 7000mile ride to either a Novara Safari or Randonee.

We know this is a personal choice but if there are any last minute opinions either (good or bad) regarding either bike or previous experiences we are all ears!!! Any improvements etc also welcome!

General Discussion / Any advise on Bicycle choice greatly appreciated.
« on: February 25, 2014, 09:01:22 am »
Gday guys

Firstly thank you to those who have previously assisted us with our departure date for our trip from Boston. We will now be leaving in May to increase the overall 'happy' experience!

Our next delema is that 1.5 weeks ago our bikes were stolen form our friends garage (holding them for us while we are visiting back home in Australia (not very bloody impressed!!) This trip is going to be Long and Hilly!! fully self supported and camping.

SOOOOOOOO now we have to make a choice as to what to ride. Our new plan is to buy 2 Scott Sportster 30 (hybrid) fom REI - my wife prefers upright position on her bike (when she isn't racing on TT bikes doing Ironman).

http://www.rei.com/product/865721/scott-sportster-30-bike-2014

Our rationale is that we can be in a comfortable upright cruise position (have ergometric hand grips already), We can lock out the front suspension when not required, We may look at changing the casssette to 11-34 or 36, and possibly the front to a 22 (not sure if necessary), we are both going to be towing bob trailers, and we don't want to have to spend a lot of money replacing our stolen babies.

Please look over specks and pull to pieces (constructively or destructively-if necessary) Any other words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys

We are 2 Aussies who are going to ride cross country form either Boston or Portland, Maine. Our start time is getting closer and we are asking whether April 22 is an appropriate date to roll out or should we delay it to May due to weather/temps in the North East??

Thanks guys

General Discussion / Health Insurance while cycling
« on: January 06, 2014, 05:25:49 am »
Gday
We are Aussie/USA Citizens returning to USA after being in Australia for 4months.  We will be embarking on a cycling adventure from Coast to Coast (East/West) and border to border (Canada to Mexico) from Mid-April to October 2014. We had to resign from our jobs in California for our trip back to Australia, subsequently when we return to USA April 2014 we will obviously be unemployed whilst cycling across the USA.
Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions on our options for health insurance while we are doing this????
Any help or ideas would be unbelievably grateful!
Thanks
Julie-Anne and Ken

Gday guys

My wife and myself are looking at riding the Northern Tier and Pacific coast. Statring Portland, Maine to Astoria, Oregon then up to Vancouver then down to Imperial beach, California. Starting Mid April 2014.

We are allowing aprox 7 months to complete. Any Advice on these routes of 'must do' or 'must don't' would be greatly appreciated.

We notice alot of people talking about free camping/ wild/ parks etc. If anyone could explain this to us it would be great as we usually just pull off the side of the road in Australia and 'bush camp' where ever we think it is safe enough or 'less exposed' for the night.

Are there specific designated free camp areas?? We have also heard of a site 'Warm Showers' would this be of any benefit to us?

Thank everyone for any advice you may be willing to share.
