Urban Cycling / Advice for New York city

Hi. I'm finishing a coast to coast ride next week (probably on Tuesday 8 September) in New York. Does anyone have any good tips/suggestions/routes for riding into the city, ending up in Manhattan?

In particular, is there a good way to come through the suburbs from the west or north west?

California / San Francisco to Carson City - any advice please?

Hi. I'm setting off from San Francsico on Monday on the Western Express. I'm trying to decide where to stop for the nights before and after Carson Pass. So does anyone have a suggestion how many miles a day to aim for on the climb up from Sacramento - based on the fact that I can easily manage 80-100 miles when the ride is fairly flat.

And any good places to stay - preferably not camping, although I can if necessary.

(I'm not local, by the way, I'm from the UK.)

California / Local advice for a UK visitor please?

Hi guys. I'm flying out from the UK in a couple of weeks to ride coast to coast on the Western Express and TransAm routes. I've done plenty of long distance rides in the UK including Scottish mountains, but I've never ridden in the USA. Any tips would be gratefully received - especially for once I'm up in the mountains. I live in a country that doesn't have bears!

I have the full set of ACA maps and it looks as though even where towns are few and far between I ought to be able to find accommodation in town every night. (I will have a tent just in case.) And a friend who has ridden coast to coast recommended taking pepper spray for wild dogs: that was a new one to me!

Routes / Columbus OH to Yorktown VA or Cape Cod help with routes.

Hi. I live in the UK and am cycling USA coast to coast this summer. I have friends in Columbus OH. Does anyone out there have any tips or advice about riding from there to Yorktown VA or a similar area? Good cycling roads, terrain, accommodation? Really just whether it's a sensible journey.

Another option if I have time is Columbus to Cape Cod. Any similar tips etc would be great.

Routes / Advice about routes please

Hi. I'm an experienced cyclist from England, but have never cycled in the USA before. I'm used to long distances and mountains, but could anyone kindly advise on some things for a Coast to Coast I plan to do (solo) next year? (July-August 2015.) I plan about 80-100 miles/day.

How deserted is the Western Express route? Will it be easy to find groceries and a bed (e.g. motel)?
Hope to connect to Trans America Trail from Colorado - worried it might be unbearably hot that time of year. Anyone think it's OK?
Then Underground Railroad to see friends in Columbus OH and across to Cape Cod. Any suggestions for routes/highlights gratefully accepted.
I hope mainly to get a motel/bed-and-breakfast bed each night without booking ahead. Is that easy to do? Everywhere, or only some places?

If anyone has any favourite tips/locations etc do let me know. I'm not worried about distance but need to be fairly direct so I don't run out of time. Hope to cycle about 40-50 days plus a few rest days. Any sections (maybe Kansas?) where it's easy to do big miles and get ahead of schedule?
