Gear Talk / Great Divide Tire Dilemma
« on: May 17, 2010, 07:56:45 pm »
Hi All:

So after all the research it seems that the resounding vote is the Schwalbe Marathon XR.  Good.  Problem is I'm riding a hard Tail 29er (with a rear rack for panniers) and a front suspension fork and the largest size for the tire is 700 X 50 (28 X 2.0).  The tire fits fine on my wheels but I'm now concerned it may be too small.  Everyone raved the puncture-resistance of this tire for the Divide Route but I've also heard of folks who say to get a tire with a width 2.2 or higher for cushion and/or grip since I'm riding a HT.  Oy-Vey!!  Any input would be appreciated.  Specifically those that have had success with a tire on a 29er wheel for off-road use.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

General Discussion / Techno-info for GDMBR
« on: April 26, 2010, 08:32:27 pm »
Greetings everyone:
Not sure if this is the appropriate section to post this but here goes.  I'm riding the GDMBR this summer as a fundraiser and was wondering if anyone had advice as to the best method or device(s) to use to periodically update my website with text and images?  I did the Northern Tier in '07 as a similar thing and found libraries to be hit-or-miss with odd hours and often with restrictions, old computers and library police!  Some towns were great and others abysmal.  I'm thinking phone reception, satellite, iphone ipad, best carriers, devices, etc.

All suggestions sincerely appreciated.

Routes / Great Divide Start & Finish Logistics
« on: March 22, 2010, 07:37:15 pm »
ACA has been great to have a list of shuttles to provide me transport to and from the start and finish but what about bike transport?

-Are people shipping to a bike shop or hotel in Banff?  Is there a LBS in Banff to assemble a shipped bike or is it all self-serve?

-And when I get to Antelope Wells I can call a shuttle to come get me but where is the nearest airport and what do I do with my bike?  Are folks buying open-ended flight tickets for the return?  I guess it's two one-way flights?  Do they ship a box to themselves ahead of time for the return of the bike?

Sorry to sound like such a newbie but when I've done big trips before I've usually had a pick-up at the end!!

And I did search the archives but didn't see how this specific issue was addressed previously.  So I apologize in advance if this has already been beaten to death!!

Gear Talk / suspension seat post...
« on: February 18, 2010, 12:02:14 pm »
Hello everyone:

I'm seriously considering the GDMB Route this summer and the only thing that will stop me is my back!!  I've already tried everything I can think of to set me up for the highest probability of success (29er Gunnar Rock Tour hard tail with great Suspension fork) and I've read that folks can get a fair bit of help with a suspension seat post.  I did the entire Northern Tier in '07 with my Cannondale Touring bike with really no back issues but I know this will be alot different!

Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Gear Talk / Rack and Panniers for T2000?
« on: March 18, 2007, 07:06:19 pm »
Hi everyone:
Sorry if this topic has been beat to death but I'm new to Touring.  I'm
planning a self-supported Northern Tier in 2 months and want to make
sure my Panniers and racks all jive with each other.  It seems that
Ortlieb's have won the Pannier race but I'm not sure about the front rack
(The Cannondale T2000 comes with a rear one already).  Anyone out
there have my bike and a good, working set-up?  I have size 48 shoes if
that's an issue?  I'll be camping mostly and not sure how big the Panniers
need to be either?  I've heard if I get a Tubus front rack I'll need to make
alot of adjustments?  Thanks in advance for this great forum.

Gear Talk / Touring computer
« on: December 24, 2006, 11:13:19 am »
Hi Everyone:
Please excuse me if this topic is "old hat" but I'm hoping to do the
Northern Tier next summer and people seem to think I'd benefit from a
computer.  I try to be a minimalist (within reason) so any suggestions?  Of
course it'd have to be durable since I'll be camping a great deal, and
hopefully just basic and simple for practical purposes.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

Gear Talk / Knee Savers
« on: August 18, 2006, 09:39:55 am »
Hi everyone:

I just bought a Cannondale T2000 recently and am new to this sport.  I've been an avid mt. biker for years but my new bike has me rubbing my right foot with the crank (despite moving the clip the farthest it would go).  I wear size 48 and am able to adjust this with my mt. bike shoes and clips but not the new ones.  So the shop that fitted me suggested these pedal extenders/knee-saver devices.  Of course the rubbing has been eliminated since the pedal is now moved laterally from the crank.  BUT...I did both sides.  Should I only do the side that was rubbing.  The reason I ask is because it seems now that my feet are TOO FAR from the crank laterally (or so I think).  So maybe the real question is if you have a foot that rubs the crank do you get a new crank with a better profile or just modify it so your foot doesn't rub?  And...do you do both sides to keep things symmetrical?  Now I have the knee-saver device on both sides with the clips maxed-out to push the shoe as close to the crank as possible.  My left knee seems a little different after a long ride too.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks all!!

Routes / Shipping bike to Seattle area?
« on: April 30, 2007, 09:17:30 pm »
HELP!!  I'm flying to Seattle on 5/22 to start my Norther Tier trip and my
previous arrangements to ship my bike have fallen through.  Does anyone
know of a good place (bike shop) and method to ship my bike to?  I'd
prefer to ship it to a bike shop since I'm not as savvy with putting it
together as I wish I was.  Thanks in advance for any help.

General Discussion / Seeing in the rain
« on: April 15, 2007, 07:24:50 pm »
Was out on a ride today and got caught in a 2 hour rain.  I was wearing
my sun glasses and after a while they proved unhelpful, no, worse than
unhelpful.  I even have clear lenses I could've swapped out but I think
they would've just gotten speckled and splattered as well.  I could see
better once I took my glasses off but it kept raining and need I say
more?!!  I don't have fenders either but I'm not certain that that would've
made much difference?  Any advice?  Aside from pulling over and waiting
out a storm?

General Discussion / Foot rubbing with T2000
« on: August 18, 2006, 01:47:20 pm »
Hi everyone:

I recently bought a new Cannondale T2000 and my right foot rubs the crank.  I have size 48 shoes and this also happened with my mt. bike but that shoe was able to clear enough with the clip adjusted/maxed all the way to the side on the bottom.  Should I get a new crank?  Different shoes?   I bought these "knee savers" devices that the shop encouraged and put them on both sides of the crank to extend each pedal laterally.  This keeps the right shoe from rubbing now but I'm wondering if I should've only done it on the side that rubbed.  My left knee feels a bit wierd now with it on that pedal.  Anyone else have any similar problems?  Any advice?

General Discussion / Hurting hands w/ Cannondale T2000
« on: August 02, 2006, 08:33:04 pm »
Hi all:  I've been an avid mt. biker for years and wanted to
start touring.  So I bought (almost) a 2007 T2000
Cannondale and was all psyched to start riding but my hands
hurt like hell in the position the guy @ the shop said to put
them in (cradling my thumb up near the shifters).  I literally
have to put them near the turn in the handlebar to avoid so
much pressure and pain.  Any advice or solution?  I put 1/2 of
the $$ down but don't want a bike I can't ride comfortably.

Can I get different handlebars?  Could it be as dumb as my
gloves?
