Hello,

I have recently been in contact with a cheerleader and developer for the Locus Pro smartphone mapping/navigation app. We have devised a way to make a fairly standard GPX file navigable with turn-by-turn navigation. All that would be required is a very minor change to the GPX file generator.

Is this a capability that ACA would like to talk about supporting in the future? If so, whom should I contact at ACA to begin this discussion.

Thanks,
Steve

Hello,

Does anyone know where to find GPS data for routes in the USBR system? turn-by-turn would be sufficient and POIs for services would be great!

Thanks,

Steve

Bikecentennial / Bike Centennial Cookbook
« on: May 19, 2015, 05:51:34 pm »
Hello,

It appears that there was a cookbook written in 1976 for Bike Centennial. In 2011 it was available as a PDF on the ACA website. The old links are now dead ends. Do any of you know where I can find this PDF copy of t he cookbook.

Thanks,

Steve

Hello,

I am planning on doing some bike touring, currently just in the continental U.S. and am wondering about the feasibility of using a GPS enabled smart phone like a Galaxy S4 for navigation. The phone would obviously have to contain the map data and it would also need to work in remote areas where there was little or no cell phone/data coverage.

I am not necessarily looking for the mobile device to make routing decisions or give turn by turn directions. I would just like to know where I am, show enough detail to get where I am going, and display any available services on the way. I know that even dedicated GPS units can make bad routing decisions for cyclists including heavily traveled roads and possible gravel roads. I don't plan on checking my brain when I hop in the saddle but would like enough information from the device to allow me to make my own routing decisions.

So are there any existing Android apps that I should consider to implement this functionality?

Thanks,

Steve

South / Southern tier Map (Section) 6
« on: January 06, 2015, 09:52:11 am »
Fellow Cycle Tourists,

This spring some friends and I are planning on doing Bike Florida and then Cycle Zydeco in Lafayette, LA. To get from Bike Florida to Cycle Zydeco we are planning to ride the Southern Tier section 6. We will have the luxury of a support vehicle so we won't have to carry our gear on the bikes.

Looking at the map for section 6 it would appear that this section is an extremely rural area with very few options for services and camping. Does anyone have access to a good proven itinerary for section 6? I know that ACA runs this route regularly on their tours. Ideally we would like to keep this to under 80 miles a day.

Thanks,

Steve
