Gear Talk / Gear that I was glad to have taken
« on: September 22, 2022, 08:15:32 am »
Earlier this week I went cycle camping on the Pine Creek Rail trail. I knew cell coverage in the Gorge was non existent but I didn’t know how much of the 62 mile trail didn’t have coverage. I came across my NOAA Weather radio while rummaging through my gear box. I hadn’t used it in years. I threw it in my pannier. It’s really small and light. I had checked the weather before going out there. No rain in forecast for 2 1/2 days. But I thought it’s only a few ounces.

It alerted me next morning at camp that severe thunderstorms & 1” size hail was predicted that night with up to 1/2” of rain. Instead of a leisurely ride that day, I rode 75 miles roundtrip to see the southern section of the trail. I had ridden the northern section including the Gorge years ago. I was able to pack up and get out before the storm.

River Rd. in Phillipsburg NJ is being tar & gravel paved. The thick gravel is for approximately 3 miles starting at the Memorial Parkway going north. Signage is poorly marked.

Alternate bypass is Belvidere Road (County Route 646 which changes to County Route 519). Less scenic, less hilly but faster.

General Discussion / Hosting Travelers

We hosted our first cycle travelers last week. They were on the Atlantic Coast route and were slowed down by rain. They didn’t get as far as they needed and turned into my development. Luckily a neighbor was going out and directed them to a “a guy who bicycles a lot”. We opened our home to them.

The next morning I rode with them up 20 miles up to a difficult spot on Rte 46 @ Rte 80. To show them where you go the wrong way on a one way instead of a suicidal run on the highway.

I have seen cyclists on the Atlantic Coast route before.  It’s a 1/2 mile from my house.  I’m on a road parallel to River rd. Which is faster & less hilly but not scenic.   If you haven’t hosted cyclists before it’s a great experience.
