Routes / route 66 updates
« on: August 04, 2015, 03:07:44 pm »
really appreciate all the help i've gotten on this forum!

i've just read about some issues on route 66.  some of it is a little dated, like jan 2015, but it said about some bridges being out and the section btw ludlow and fenner being closed and the ambiguity as to whether cyclists can indeed "legally" hop on I40.

anyone know of the current conditions?

and do most gas stations allow poor cyclists to grab a little water from a tap or a well??

Routes / CA/AZ desert questions
« on: August 03, 2015, 04:56:14 pm »
i'm planning to cycle from palm springs, ca east on hwy 62.  then get on 95 north thru lake havasu city.  then pick up route 66/i40.

any advice on water/logistics through here?  i'm fully prepared it'll be hot as hades and incredibly challenging.  i get that.  i just would like any riders experienced with this area in terms of particularly long "nothing" stretches.

thanks, i'm on the road, currently in santa barbara having started in florida in march.  i'm heading back to florida in any way other than the crow flies,

Routes / how should i go east from Santa Barbara to Grand Canyon
« on: July 29, 2015, 11:06:31 am »
quick background, i just joined this site!  from 2005-2010 i rode my bike around the world.  i am now on a fl to fl trip.  i went up the appalachians, west across southern canada/northern usa, and am now going south along the pacific coast.  my feet and pedals are now in san fran.

from here i will ride to santa barbara and then...east back to fl via the grand canyon.  at least this is the plan.

the vastness of the desert is fine, but i'm just wondering if anybody has a sweet viable route where i don't have to lug too much water.  fyi, i don't mind, if need be, riding on the interstates.

any help would be awesome,
gracias,
