2013 Surly Disc Trucker

This Disc Trucker is a 60cm frame on 700c wheels. The complete bike was built up last winter with all new parts. The only thing left stock is the front wheel and brake calipers. Everything else has been upgraded and changed in some way. It has a complete Shimano XT drivetrain, Velocity Dyad rear wheel with XT hub, Surly rear rack, fenders, Nitto handlebars, Shimano R77? bar end shifters, Schwalbe Marathon tires, etc. It is in great condition and works perfect.

The frame, fork and rear rack have all been powder coated a custom charcoal color. You won't see another one like this. The frame does have a few nicks and marks but nothing crazy. All parts are in good condition. It comes with a cheap WTB seat but I can add a Brooks B17 if needed.

Routes / Southern Tier with no camping?

We are in the process of planning to ride the southern tier route starting in March 2016. We are trying to work out the details and figure some things out.

My main question is can it be done without camping? Are there any long stretches where there are no services? We are going to be unsupported and carrying all our gear. We are basically planning for 50 miles a day but can adjust that once we're riding.

Gear Talk / Drivetrain HELP

I just bought my first touring bike. It is a Surly disc trucker. It is used and has quite a few miles on it. The drivetrain is pretty worn out. I have my first tour coming up in March and want to upgrade some of the components. I am only really looking at Shimano triple cranks.

My question is what is the optimal gearing. I live in the mountains so there are nothing but hills around here. The tour I am planning right now is the southern tier so there may not be tons of climbing but I want to be ready for it. We will be going unsupported so I will be carrying all my gear. I am also 6'4" 270 and put some abuse on cranks.

My options seem to be:
Shimano XT M770 9 Speed - 44/32/22
Shimano XT M780 10 Speed - 42/32/24
Shimano XT M782 10 Speed - 40/30/22

I am planning to buy the entire groupset but not sure what would be the best. The prices for these are all pretty close and in my budget. Is there another set I should be looking at?

Classifieds / WTB: Touring bike size 60cm or so

I am looking for my first touring bike. I am planning to ride the Southern Tier starting in March next year.

I am very interested in a disc trucker or something along those lines. They seem to be the best bang for the buck that I can find.

I am 6'4" and about 270 so I need something that is large and tough.

Let me know what you have.
