Gear Talk / Rohloff Speedhub
« on: February 16, 2017, 02:32:50 pm »
Currently I've a Surly LHT I use primarily for self-contained rides. My current triple ring gearing range extends approx. from 18 gear-inches to 109 gear-inches. I do need the 18 - 19 range for climbing loaded but I do run out of top end gearing on a regular basis.

I'm looking to go to a Rohloff Speedhub. My question is, has anyone had any experience running a double ring on the front with a Rohloff speedhub? This is the only way I can see reaching the gear inch range I desire.

I'm told by CycleMonkey, US Rohloff distributor, it can be done, but I wonder on pro vs. cons, maintenance and durability.

Thanks for the help.

General Discussion / Cyclocross Bike for Southern Tier
« on: November 30, 2015, 05:15:16 pm »
I'm planning to do the supported Southern Tier in 2016. I've only been touring for a just over a year so I have a lot to learn. I usually do self-contained on my LHT but I don't need all that weight for this ride. My road bike is great for local but won't meet my needs for this adventure.

I've been looking at a Titanium Cyclocross frame from Foundry. I've test ridden twice and was very comfortable on the bike both times. Not as upright ride as the Surley but not as bent over as a road bike. I want the Titanium as I love the solid ride of steel. The bike is able to handle up to 41cm tires so I'll be able to use paved or non-paved in the future.

My questions are:
1. Thoughts on cyclocross bike in general for Southern Tier?
2. This frame is set-up for disc brakes, should I go with cable or hydraulic? My local bike shop is promoting a Trek hybrid disc brake, cable activates the hydraulics.
3. Recommended wheel set? One bike shop is promoting Bontrager and another shop is promoting the HED Belgium+. Since I'm new to all of this have no clue on wheels. I do know I'll use Schwabe tires.

Any and all help, input, and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!!
