Gear Talk / cooking System
« on: October 30, 2021, 02:23:17 pm »
Starting to plan my Trans-Am trip next May East to West in 2022.I plan on doing mostly camping and cooking.I have a MSR 1L Windburner. Weights 1lb. I'm thinking of my Firebox nano with 2L pot and pan to allow me to have more options in the kitchen as well as different types of fuel. I will be adding a couple more pounds which i am okay with.

My main question is what do other cyclists use for a cooking system that travel like myself?  What have been your experiences with a bigger cook system? Thanks.

General Discussion / bicycle navigation computer
« on: January 27, 2021, 01:40:40 pm »
I like to use paper maps for navigation when riding. However I am curious about bike computers like the Wahoo Roam and Garmin. All I use is a basic one that tells speed, distance, time etc. Are they worth the price? Seems like a good tool to compliment paper maps? Anyone who uses them I would appreciate some feedback thanks.

Gear Talk / Rohloff SpeedHub
« on: January 13, 2021, 10:50:49 am »
I have asked about drivetrains before. This question is specific to the Rohloff. For cyclist who have toured with them, do you or have you had any problems with them? Leaking oil things like that. Any regrets on getting one? Do you wish that you stayed with a standard chain derailleur system? I have read several articles with the pros and cons. I know they are expensive. Just wanted feedback from cyclist who use them. Thanks.

Gear Talk / Pinion or derailleur gears?
« on: May 01, 2019, 02:26:03 pm »
I was curious for anyone who has a Pinion carbon belt drive. What do you think of it? Which is better for touring the C1.12 or P1.18? Are they worth the money? I have looked at the specs of each and hear the pros and cons.  Still would like input from those who use them. Or are you better off with traditional derailleur chain gearing? A big investment thats why I'm asking.  Thanks.

Gear Talk / Panniers. Waterproof or non waterproof?
« on: March 15, 2019, 12:05:39 pm »
I'm looking at different types of panniers and am on the fence which way to go? People who use waterproof panniers do you or have you ever had problems with moisture inside the bags? Is there one style that is more durable? Is the top loading a pain? I am looking to get a front and rear set for long distance touring. The two brands I have narrowed down is Ortlieb and Arkel. Anyone with experience on one of these brands and the type of material used, I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Routes / TransAm Bike Trail Planning
« on: July 10, 2018, 07:24:34 pm »
How far in advance should you plan a ride like the TransAm? I would like to do it next summer. Always wanted to do it!  On average how long does it take with a touring bike?  East or West does it matter? When is the best time to start east? Or west?  Maps or GPS which is better? I live in North Carolina if it helps. Thanks

Gear Talk / Front and rear lights
« on: July 10, 2018, 07:12:05 pm »
I'm looking for a front and rear light so I can be seen during daytime as well as evening. I see some use recharging battery packs or just alkaline battery? With rechargeable ones when your on long tours how do you go about recharging? trying to set up a new touring bike. Anyone with first hand experience? Are these charging packs good to use on a GPS or cell phone? Thanks.

Gear Talk / new bike
« on: June 11, 2018, 03:54:26 pm »
I have been out of bike touring for 25 years. I am getting back into it, and I'm new to adventure cycling and this forum. The two big questions I have are buying  a standard touring bike? I am leaning towards the (Kona Sutra) Or a custom bike? Is it worth it? I plan on doing a lot of long distance riding. Any help or suggestions I would appreciate. Thanks.
