General Discussion / Paw Paw WV to Senecaville OH via GAP
« on: June 02, 2020, 10:43:31 am »
Planning to knock out another 4-5 days next week on our cross country journey.  Wondering if any has current status or conditions of the route from Paw Paw WV up to Pittsburgh and then west through Wheeling WV?  Stores open?  Campgrounds?  Restaurants?  How’s the trail?

Thanks for any information you have.

I’m not tech savvy. I have a new phone now and my sections purchased don’t show up in the app. Any advice?

General Discussion / NYC to CHI vs. Eastern Express
« on: October 15, 2019, 01:57:42 pm »
Hello all,
I’m multi-stage tripping across the US. Starting on the Jersey shore, ending in Washington state.  We started following the NYC to CHI route via the philly alternative.  Eventually we’ll join up with the TAT then head West out of Missoula. Right now I’m contemplating the route from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis. Looks like the NYC to CHI and the Eastern Express cover slightly different but largely similar routes. Does anyone have first hand experience on either route or can offer a comparison analsysis of the two routes?  I’m riding with 2 12-14 year old boys. We’re in no hurry and like to see what there is to see.

General Discussion / Riding w/ kids
« on: May 06, 2019, 08:54:22 am »
Couple of basic questions:  We’re going t tackle the Chicago to New York route via the Phil’s alternate in a couple of weeks. Will have the 11 year old and 13 riding along with me (dad) while mom is driving the trailer up ahead from overnight camping location to location.

1) from an ordering standpoint, I assume you would generally have the kids ride in front of you (you in back) so that you can watch both the kids. Probably the rest way to do it?
2) any thoughts on controlling group speed?  The 13 can and will want to fly. The 11 year old isn’t as fast. They’re brothers so they’ll find a way to argue over it.  Any tips are appreciated.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Advice on mapping plan
« on: May 06, 2019, 08:46:47 am »
In a couple of weeks the family is going to take the Chicago to New York route. I have a couple of questions regarding maps / directions:
1) am planning on using the ACA app and then buying the sections we need.  I believe this gives me the route to follow - does it also give turn by turn directions?
2) also planning on buying the hard copy maps - I assume this makes sense?
3) any tips, tricks, risks or downside to using the app instead of a digital device?

100% new to this so I appreciate any advice you all may have.

Routes / Chicago to NYC - Philly alternate
« on: January 07, 2019, 09:31:04 am »
In June I’ll be riding from Mantoloking NJ to Pittsburgh PA on the Philly alternate of the Chicago to New York City route.  Was wondering if anyone has ridden this and can provide prospective on the bikeability of the route. I assume obviously it’s at least decent or it wouldn’t be a route. Will be riding with 11 & 13 year old boys. Thanks,

Routes / Underground Railroad around Cincy
« on: January 03, 2019, 11:12:35 am »
Am planning a path that includes the Underground Railroad route around the Cincy area. Just in the planning stages but that route looks to add an extra day or so by backtracking east instead of heading due south or even south west coming out of Cincy.  Is there a more direct route or (i’m Sure there are) are there logical reasons why the longer route makes sense. Appreciate the help. Thanks.

General Discussion / Support vehicle on TAT
« on: October 24, 2018, 03:47:10 pm »
Hello all,
First post here. I’ve read a lot about experiences on the TAT but most of them are self supported.  Our trip will be with a camper/trailer support vehicle (wife doesn’t want to ride across, 11 year probably can’t do the ~65 miles / day necessary to fit into a summer break, 13 year old should be fine). Any thoughts, guidance or direction on a camper trailer SAG vehicle on the TAT?  Thanks for sharing any advice or experience you may have.
