General Discussion / Touring in winter
« on: February 21, 2013, 04:07:39 pm »
Ok so it wasn't as cold as Northern Canada thanks to the gulf stream, but Helen and I just got back from 3 weeks cycle touring in Northern Scandinavia.

Temperatures while cycling and camping between - 5 and -30 degrees C.

In short, everything to -15 is fine once you get used to it, below that things start getting complicated, uncomfortable and hard work.

parts 1 and 2 of the blog are done, more coming soon,

My trip in Africa is coming to its end and for my next trip I'd like to explore the other end of the thermometer.

Anyone got any thoughts on routes that are possible with a fully loaded bike, 2.1" studded tires and a wimpy Brit?

My idea would be something like Toronto to Calgary in 2-3 months then pick up part of the Great Divide in spring for a month, by which time the freedom credits will be gone and therefore time to work again  :-[

Naturally I don't do major highways such as the Trans Canadian Highway, though will need compressed snow secondary roads/trails.

General Discussion / 6 montha into Shane Cycles Africa
« on: June 04, 2012, 12:22:08 pm »
Hi Folks,

Only 6 months into my trip and I've already seen so much it feels like a life time on the road. I love this nomad life and hope it continues for years.

Here's a little video I put together to sum up the first 6 months and about 5000 miles.

Tails winds and blue skies..

Just another couple of months and my biggest trip to date starts.

Leg 1: Flight from Amsterdam to Cape town(+/- 12 hours).
Leg 2: Cycle back to Amsterdam (12-18 months).

The route: Zigzag a little through the Southern African countries, hang a left at or just after DR congo then keep the Atlantic on the left until Morocco, take a boat, then its just the 2000 mile sprint to the end.

Should you have tips, contacts, idea's or just want to send me your life savings as sponsorship visit my site

Thanks, and enjoy the read!

Routes / Niagra falls te NY

Hi guys,

As my cross country(non ACA route) trip draws to a close I'm thinking of stopping off at Niagra on my way to New York, Does anyone have any thoughts about a nice route from Niagra to NY city and once near the city is there an easy (bike friendly) wat to get downtown, I thought a nice photo with Mrs Liberty would be a nice closer for my trip.

Thanks and looking forward to your responces

Routes / Jeffrey city WY and Mrs happy
« on: September 04, 2009, 02:08:02 pm »
Hi guys,

I wonder if anyone else has had the same run in with Mrs happy at the Jeffrey city motel and split rock bar+ cafe.

I'm usually not too difficult about my motel room in these small towns but mushrooms growing in the carpet was a little much for me. I judging by her reaction she hates cyclists and has had similar things happen before.

Routes / TransAm shortcut

Im hoping to win a couple of days here and there along the route so that I can be done within 70 days and have enough days off for detours to things that interest me.

I'm  thinking about the idea of cutting the detour out to Missoula, by heading south-east from Sisters. I see(if I believe google maps), that its possible to ride almost all the way parallel to the 84 without having to get too close to the freeway. Then just above Salt Lake city, I can head roughly east again towards Rawlings. This route will save almost 400mile which give me 5-6 days extra for some detours in the the Rockies (incl. Independence pass:)).

So my questions are;

1. What will I miss if I choose to do this route apart from ice cream in Missoula and Yellowstone.
2. Would it be a big mistake to take this route because its not very pleasant for example? If the published route is ALOT nicer than this route then I'd rather do the extra 400miles and run the risk of not getting to the other coast, a pleasant journey is much more important than the final destination.

Thanks for any feedback and suggestions.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Gps route different to aca maps?
« on: June 04, 2009, 04:14:08 pm »
Hi folks,

I've just recieved the first 3 parts of the Transam maps. And now I've also downloaded the GPs waypoints, but it seems that the gps route between Florence and Eugene is largly diffrent to the map. So not only have I bought a map for only one leg but it also differs from the Gps information.

Is this the same for other parts of the route? if so then I need to decide which item to leave at home if only 1 of them is accurate......

Thanks for the reactions
