Routes / Start the Trans Am in Florence, OR
« on: January 19, 2024, 09:36:46 pm »
Hi,

I'm waiting for my TransAm maps 1,2,3 to show up, but can't stop thinking about the trip!  So, if I ride from the Pacific to Missoula, I'll have finished the Trans Am.  I'm thinking about switching directions and going from Florence to Missoula.

Does the road from Florence to Eugene have a shoulder?  Is Florence a good starting place?  or is it better to start in Missoula?  I thought it would be nice to have the road companions along the way if I started at the beginning of the trail.

Thanks to you.

Routes / Alternative route from Rawlins to Jeffry City WY
« on: May 28, 2023, 08:14:08 pm »
Hi Cyclists,

I've been GPSing the routes along the TransAm and often alternatives to the TransAm appear.  One segment that has had me uneasy is Rawlins to Jeffrey City WY.  TransAm route is 75 miles; GPS alternative is is 66.  Nine miles at the end of the day is a lot for a 69 y.o.  Has anyone done the road that goes through Crooks Gap instead of Muddy Gap?

I've already decided to take the Ute Mountain Highway from Silverthorn, CO   to Hot Sulfur Springs, CO instead of taking the highway through Kremmling.  Has anyone done that?

I appreciate your contributions to the forum.  THX!

Gear Talk / rear lighting
« on: May 06, 2023, 09:21:01 am »
On my rear rack, I'll have tent and sleep pad.  That does not leave visibility for a seat post light.  I'd like a red blinker on the back of my helmet and maybe one on my back rack too.  Can anyone recommend?  Thank you

Gear Talk / map case

Has anyone had any luck making a DIY map case for the handlebar bag?  I have an Ortleib, but it has no map case.  Thank you

Pacific Northwest / Lewis and Clarke vs Transam: oregon to Missoula
« on: January 31, 2022, 08:41:42 pm »
I'm deciding between the Lewis and Clarke Trail and the TransAM from Oregon for a ride from ORegon to Silverthorn, CO.

I'm 65, prob riding solo, camping, motels, cooking and eating out, about 50 miles per day.  I don't want to purchase all the maps in order to make this decision.  I have never been to Oregon before.

I want to consider/compare the the rigor and traffic and interest of each trail.

Lewis and Clarke:  I like the idea of the Columbia River Gorge for the beauty.  This Trail is shorter by about 180 miles.  But some of it is unpaved and includes gravel.  Do the alternative routes give a paved option?

TransAm is certainly beautiful.  Not sure if it is less challenging than the Lewis and Clarke Trail apart from the mileage.

Thank you.

Routes / Tetons route
« on: May 18, 2021, 06:17:04 pm »
I saw in an ACA email a recommendation to try the Teton trail instead of the high-traffic Yellowstone Park route.  Does that mean the dirt/gravel route?  I don't see a Tetons map in the ACA offerings.  Is there another recommendation?  I don't want to ride on gravel.
