General Discussion / Kids on the Great divide

I am looking at taking my son on an epic journey in a  couple of years -- the Great Divide.  He will be 12.  He is big for his age and athletic.

Although neither of us has done anything like this before, I anticipate several shorter trips before the big adventure.
So, of course I am looking for advice.    (I have been reading the stories for years, so the advice regarding a  trip to a shrink will be ignored)


Has anyone done the whole divide with kids/teens?   Did you use tandem or solo bikes?
I am thinking solo bikes with trailers for each of us.

How did you find maintaining ties with home and friends?  I don't expect home sickness to be an issue, but some contact is nice.

Any suggestions on trip planning that is specific to kids?  I plan on doing a lot of logistical planning before he ever knows so he won't get frustrated with the long timeline.
