General Discussion / Cookie Lady
« on: May 12, 2023, 07:00:23 pm »
Does anyone know if staying at the Cookie Lady’s is still an option.  I have a call out to the number on the maps.  Any other suggestions going west bound shortly after Afton  or Rockfish Gap would be appreciated.  We will be heading through that way tomorrow!

Food Talk / Post Offices and food mail drops
« on: December 26, 2022, 02:25:59 pm »
Years ago I did an AT Thru-hike and made very good use of post offices to have food packages and other gear mailed too.  I did a lot of dehydration(spaghetti sauce, ground beef, etc) and bought food items(peanuts, raisins, breakfast bars, etc) in bulk to save money.  Does this hold true for a TransAM ride or does it just make sense to buy as I go?

Routes / Richmond Alternate?
« on: December 13, 2022, 03:57:32 pm »
I will be doing the TransAM route this May.  Any recomendations on if the Richmond Alternate in VA is worth considering?  My thought is I've never been there and it might be neat to ride through.  I also saw on the map set there is a hostel located in the city.

Gear Talk / New touring bike recommendations
« on: November 23, 2022, 10:08:34 pm »
I've decided to purchase a new bike for a 2023 Transamerica trip.  I don't want to be limited to tarmac, but will primarily be on tarmac.  My short list is Kona Sutra, Surly Disc Trucker, and maybe Stanforth Kibo.  I am leaning towards the Sutra but still very much undecided.  I like the Kibo but import taxes and shipping are cons.  Gearing for climbing is important, as well as capability to handle some gravel and dirt.  Other bikes I should be looking at?  Very interested in recommendations!  Thanks.

Gear Talk / Gearing for Trek Checkpoint on Transamerica route
« on: November 11, 2022, 06:13:23 pm »
I'm riding the Transamerica route in May 2023.  Going with the 'ride what you have' , I'm considering using my Trek Checkpoint.  It has a 50-34 chainring and a 11-34 cassette.  I would really appreciate any feedback on this combination.  It it enough for the tougher climbs given I will have the extra weight of gear?  Any and all feedback would be appreciated!
