Routes / Portland Oregon to Reno Nevada
« on: January 06, 2013, 10:20:42 pm »
I am riding from Portland Oregon to Reno Nev. this July and am looking for route suggestions.  I have thought about the Sierra/Cascade route but also though that it might be more fun to go down the coast and then cut over.  Any thoughts about which of the two routes?  Also, if I go the coast route, where should I cut over from the coast to Reno?  Thanks

Gear Talk / Brooks saddles and rain
« on: October 09, 2007, 11:47:09 am »
I am looking to put a Brooks B17 saddle on my touring bike.  My only concern is how the leather holds up to the wet.  I live in the maritime Pacific NW and we sometime get rain. I have fenders on my bike so I guess that I am less worried about it for rides around home but what about touring and camping (doing the Northern tier in 2008).  What if it rains for a few days?  I know that the saddle is made in England so it must beable to deal with some rain.

Also what are peoples experiances with the care and feeding of the saddle?

Thanks,
Chip

Routes / Route help needed Portland OR to Reno NV
« on: January 03, 2009, 09:48:17 pm »
I want to ride from Portland Oregon to Reno Nevada with a stop over in Kalamath Falls.

The ride will be done sometime this summer or maybe early fall.  Will be camping, if that matters.  Does anyone have any information about the roads and what route would be best to take?

Thanks,
Chip

My friend and I want to ride across the country in the summer of 2008. We cannot decide between the Northern Tier route or the Trans-America route. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Routes / N. Washington coast; peninsula or inland?
« on: December 11, 2006, 03:54:21 pm »
We are riding the Washington coast (N to S) this summer (Late July/early Aug).  I have been looking at "Bicycling the Pacific Caost" by Kirkendall and Spring and am trying to find more information about taking either the Olympic Peninsula or the inland (down the sound) route.  Does anyone have any thoughts on which would be a better route? I will be traveling with my wife and my son (15 y.o.). Neither have much touring background.

Thanks,
Chip

General Discussion / Communication from the road
« on: February 21, 2008, 01:18:37 pm »
My son and I are planning a cross-country trip for this summer (northern tier) and are wondering what options are out there for communication with the people at home.

Also, my son has dedicated the trip to raising fund and awareness for food allergies, as his 8 y.o. cousin has a potentially fatal peanut allergy.  Because of this he wants to keep a blog updated, and do some e-mail along the way.

I am pretty much a technophobe but do have a cell phone (T-Mobile, if that matters) and am willing to update.  Also my son, well, he is 17, so he will be of help in the tech world.

I would love to hear what has worked (and hasnt worked) for other tours.

Thanks,
Chip

General Discussion / Charity Tours
« on: July 06, 2007, 08:31:12 pm »
Next summer (the summer after my junior year in highschool) I'm planning to ride the northern tier route across country.I was thinking of doing the ride for a charity (I'm looking at doing it for the Food Allergy Network). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do that? I'd really like to hear from people who have done (or are doing) a ride for charity to get your input and results.

Thanks,
Seth

I am looking to try some new food while touring.  Would anyone be willing to share a favorite, one burner camp stove, recipe?  I am willing to use more then one pot but only have a MSR stove.

Thanks,
Chip

General Discussion / N. Tier budget
« on: June 16, 2007, 03:21:37 pm »
My son and I are planning to do the Northern Tier next summer (2008) and I am trying to get an idea of a ball park budget.  I know so much depends upon where we camp, the food we eat etc.  I am only thinking about what we will spend after we leave.  We are planning on taking about 10 weeks, camping most of the time but staying in a motel occationally (every 10-14 days?) doing most of our own cooking. I haven't done an extended tour for over 25 year so am really out of touch with what it will cost.  Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Chip
