Once again I call on the wisdom of the ACA forums. After having no luck on a google search, and a ACA forum search, I pose my question:

I am riding the NT (westbound) and am currently in Cleveland, OH. I have reason to stop in Chicago and was wondering if anyone could help me with a decent route off the NT (somewhere in IN) up to Chicago, IL.

Please help

You guys have always done me well. Thanks!

Routes / Houston, TX to New Orleans, LA?
« on: January 31, 2012, 03:45:16 pm »
So I'm currently in Austin, TX headed SE out of the state. I will be in Houston/Galveston in a few days (3-4). I have the whole ACA east coast route and FL Connector, but I need to still get to there. I have had several warnings about travelling through LA, MS, and AL. I'd like to see Baton Rouge, and New Orleans if possible, any tips on a route? Links are also good.

(If it matters - I'm male, white, 27yrs old, solo, on road wheels not knobs, been camping, but not opposed to a hotel if needed)

Thanks folks.
Brian

So I just got this nifty new setup, and I had a quick question:
If I am solo touring and just cooking for myself and I stay on the ACA routes how much fuel should I keep on my person at a given time? Really, I am shopping for fuel bottles and I want to know what size and/or how many to buy. I dont' want gallons of fuel on me, and I don't want to run out in a bad spot. I know someone has a quick easy answer to this.

Thanks ahead of time.

General Discussion / what cycling computer to get?
« on: September 23, 2010, 08:01:47 pm »
So I am putting the finishing touches on my dream touring bike (pics to come) and I know 0 about cycling computers, I think wireless is a must, besides that.... I really don't have clue. I have access to QBP so if it is a brand they carry that's a plus. Otherwise what can you guys recommended?

thanks gang,

General Discussion / B17 makes me numb, why?
« on: August 03, 2010, 03:11:01 am »
Time to bring up an old issue:

I have fallen to the cries of the masses. I cracked and bought my first Brooks Saddle, the B17 Standard.
It was a rock for a long while. I proofhided per factory recommendations. I ride it every day roughly 20 miles +/- on my commuter. I knew it had a serious break in period and was willing to deal with that. It has gotta alot better I will say, now 6 months in. but I notice that when I ride no hands for more than 20 minutes I numb out. Sorry ladies... I go to give myself a scratch and can't feel anything. Probably not good. I have tried slight angle up and currently slight angle down. It seems to not matter. While in classic riding position, I have no issue, but lets face it, it is nice to sit up once in awhile and give the neck and back a break. What gives? I know everyone and their brother swears by this saddle and I must be doing something wrong here. Brooks know-it-all's please chime in here.

Thanks Gang,
Ting-a-Ling Ding-a-Ling

General Discussion / cassette for phil?
« on: July 22, 2010, 01:26:03 am »
So I just finished building up a new touring wheel set, phil touring 36H hubs to velocity deda rims w/ DT straight gauge.

My question is, do I need to run a high quality cassette w/ alloy cogs or are cheap steel options just as good?
my concern is for life of free hub body and expected milage on cassette.

part #s are appreciated.

Thanks yall

General Discussion / bike security while sleeping

My worst fear is stealth camping somewhere and waking up to discover my bike is gone and I am in the middle of nowhere without a bike.

Does this fear ever cross your mind and what have you done to prevent such a thing?

I will bring a 6' cable lock. What else might I need? and how do I set it up?

Thank You Touring Pros!

General Discussion / Noob gearing Question...
« on: February 06, 2010, 04:50:10 pm »
So I"m setting up for my first tour. I will be fully loaded for months of travel in the USA. My question is this:

Do I need a gear lower than 1:1?

I have a decent Crankset with 48-38-28 and I'm wondering what do as far as a cluster. The bike will be a 700c unit, fully loaded, and a noob on it. I commute everyday and am used to about 10-20 of riding daily so I'm not out of shape really, and I'm spry at the age of 25.

Should my big cog be 28 or 32?  ???

I really like clusters that dont have big jumps, for smoother shifting, but I really don't wanna walk up hill as a trade off.

Help me touring masters. Thanks in advanced for feedback.

General Discussion / where can i find cyclist "WHITE" pages???
« on: January 23, 2010, 05:37:57 pm »
I'm getting my bike ready and I know there are people all over this country (USA) with unused couches, or free backyard tent space.  ;D

So is there a list somewhere, or do I just knock doors around 5pm?

hahaha

Thanks in advanced guys
