Gear Talk / Keens Cycling Sandles
« on: February 18, 2008, 05:52:02 pm »
Anyone had any experience with these?

Would you hike very far in them off the bike?

I'm thinking of using them on my trip this summer, and would appreciate any feed back.

Routes / Mckenzie Pass (oregon, Transamerica route)
« on: February 02, 2008, 04:39:04 pm »
So in planning my transamerica ride, I'd been thinking about starting in oregon in may----

but I read on wikipedia that Mckenzie pass is closed in till July, but has opened earlier in the past.

Does anyone know if that's the average time of year the pass opens? How can I get up to date information on when the pass might open, what the weather has been like there etc?

worst comes to worst I'll just start in yorktown---I live 3 hours away anyways.

Routes / Start Dates: PC trail & Transamerica
« on: January 22, 2008, 12:25:59 am »
Greetings!

My plans are getting firmed up for my tour and I wanted others' opinions who have done the routes.

As of now I plan to fly out to San Francisco April 14th, spend a day or two visiting with family, and then follow the Pacific Coast trail north.
I figure I'll get up to Portland (I'm detouring a little) by May 2nd or so. From there I'll start the Transamerica trail headed east.
The PC trail info recommends spring as a good time of year, and the transamerica trail says May is fine time for the trail.
My question is,
should I be fine starting these routes at these dates?

Thanks for the help, see you on the road.

Routes / Wind-->TransAmerica
« on: January 17, 2008, 07:11:41 pm »
Hi Everybody, new to the forum here and planning to do the Transamerica route come mid-april.

I live right outside D.C., and with this being my first tour (and my plans still not cemented down at this point) I'd been planning on starting out in yorktown and going west. I've heard that it'd be easier to do the route west to east because of "less head winds". I know the prevailing weather pattern in the U.S. blows west to east, but is there any truth to this?
Will I have more/a better tail wind going west to east?

See you on the road

General Discussion / Transamerica Route COST $$$
« on: February 10, 2008, 07:42:58 pm »
Hello again!

I've been saving up my money, counting the days till I leave, but I've a question for those out there who've done the transamerica route:

how much on average did you spend a day?
how much did you spend during the entire trip (excluding buying pre-trip accessories such as bike, panniers, camp equipment etc)?

I'm trying to get a good estimate.
I plan on camping whenever possible, typically cooking dinner for myself, with 1 cafe meal and snacks per day.
Planning on anywhere between 70-90 days for the trip.

thanks for all your help

General Discussion / Maps: opinion on ACA maps
« on: January 30, 2008, 02:07:00 pm »
I just received the maps for my tour this summer (san francisco to oregon, then transamerica).

The maps are very detailed but my question is:

how many of you use other maps WITH the ACA maps to help navigate? If you do use other maps, what type do you use?
